51,000 ₽ for a single night in a Japanese ryokan sounds insane. Especially when you realize you could’ve booked several nights in a standard hotel for that kind of money 😅 But would I do it again? Yes. But I’d skip such an expensive room next time. Here’s why. 🏯 What we actually booked We stayed at Yunoshimakan in Gero. I really wanted to spend at least one night away from the big city in an authentic Japanese ryokan: tatami mats, yukatas, an onsen, a traditional dinner, and just a completely different vibe after Tokyo. We paid around 51,000 ₽ for two people for one night. The price included: a large traditional-style room; two private onsens; a kaiseki dinner; a Japanese breakfast. And, of course, access to the ryokan's large public onsens. 🚄 How to get to Gero For us, Gero was the perfect pit stop between Tokyo and Osaka. Our route: Tokyo → Nagoya by Shinkansen → Gero by local train. Here’s a pro tip I’d definitely keep in mind now: double-check the schedule for that second train. It’s not the subway that runs every five minutes—there can be a pretty long wait between convenient departure times. A shuttle from the ryokan was already waiting to pick us up at Gero station. So, it’s best to factor in some buffer time for the trip, especially if you’re traveling with luggage. 🛏️ So, what was the 51,000 ₽ for? The room itself was massive. Tatami mats, sliding shoji doors, tons of space, and a lush green view—it’s a totally different world compared to standard city hotels. But the most expensive part of our booking was the private onsens. One was located right in our room, and the other was a small open-air bath surrounded by rocks and nature. And here’s the biggest takeaway I wish I had known before booking: 👉 a private onsen is cool, but for your first time, it’s completely unnecessary. That’s because the ryokan itself had gorgeous, sprawling public onsens, separated by gender. ♨️ I was NOT ready for the water temperature 😂 We visited in the summer, and it was scorching hot outside. I touched the water and my first thought was: "How do people even get in there?!" It felt like literal boiling water. So, I saved my main onsen dip for late at night. Around 11:00 PM, I headed to the women’s public bath—and by some miracle, I was completely alone. Which turned out to be perfect for a first-timer 😅 At first, I had to inch my way in, literally centimeter by centimeter. You do get used to it, but every 5–10 minutes, I still needed to get out and cool off a bit. Fun fact: as long as you sit perfectly still, it’s fine. But the second you move, the water suddenly feels even hotter 😂 🍱 Kaiseki is an experience of its own We chose our dinner time at check-in. We were escorted to a private dining room just for the two of us. There was a menu on the table, and the dishes were brought out course by course, complete with instructions on how to eat them properly. I absolutely loved this. It wasn't just a "hotel dinner," but a full-blown multi-course ritual. Breakfast was served in a communal dining area, but each table was still served their dishes sequentially. The only catch? Breakfast was super early. And we had gone to sleep at around 3:00 AM 😅 So our serene Japanese morning was rudely interrupted by an alarm clock. 🌿 But the room isn't the main highlight at all The real magic started in the evening. Sitting in an open-air onsen. Surrounded by the forest, rocks, and pure silence. Nowhere to be, nothing to rush for. After a few days in Tokyo, where we were constantly on the go, it felt almost mandatory: just stop. And that exact feeling is exactly why I’d go back. 💰 Was it worth 51,000 ₽? The ryokan experience itself? Absolutely, yes. But if I were to book it again now, I’d do things differently. I’d book a more basic room, stick to the public onsens, and maybe reserve a private/family bath separately if I really wanted to. So, to sum up: ✅ first ryokan experience — yes ✅ kaiseki — yes ✅ at least one onsen — an absolute must ❌ overpaying for a luxury room just for a private onsen — skip it And I’d also change one more thing: I'd stay for at least two nights instead of just one. Because a one-night stay wraps up right around the time you finally stop rushing. If you had to pick just one ryokan in Gero Onsen, it has to be Yunoshimakan. This is the most iconic ryokan in Gero Onsen, recognized alongside Arima and Kusatsu as one of Japan's top three hot spring resorts. Founded in 1931, its main building and the special annex rooms have been preserved exactly as they were built in the 6th year of the Showa era (1931). The corridors and architectural structures are even designated as national Registered Tangible Cultural Properties. The moment you stroll down the historic wooden hallways, you'll instantly feel that this place is in a league of its own. It's also renowned for the special room where the Emperor of Japan actually stayed in 1976. Private-hotspringRyokanclub 🚄 Accessibility It takes about 1.5 hours from Nagoya Station to Gero Station via the JR Limited Express. From the station, the ryokan is a 5-minute shuttle bus ride (or a 25-minute walk). Advanced reservations for the shuttle are essential. Since it's located on a hill, walking up with luggage is highly discouraged—definitely book the shuttle. Gltjp ♨️ Hot Springs Gero Onsen features an alkaline simple spring known as the "Beauty Bath," making the water incredibly silky and smooth. Soaking in the large public open-air bath while taking in the lush forest views is the absolute highlight. With the exception of the main building rooms that don't have bathtubs, all rooms feature private hot spring baths. There are also rooms with private open-air baths, as well as 4 reservable private baths, making it perfect for couples and families looking for a quiet retreat. Gltjp 🏯 Grounds The massive 50,000-tsubo garden is maintained exactly as it was when the ryokan first opened. Head up to the observatory for a breathtaking panoramic view of Gero city. Taking a stroll through the garden in your yukata before dinner is highly recommended. Triple Guide 🍱 Dining Dinner is a luxurious kaiseki course featuring Hida beef. Since Gifu Prefecture is the home of Hida beef, the quality is truly exceptional. Breakfast is a beautifully presented traditional Japanese set meal, which also received very high satisfaction. 📌 Checkpoints Check-in: 15:00 / Check-out: 11:00 With a total of 67 rooms, the main building (retro wooden style) and the new building offer completely different vibes, so you can choose based on your preference. It's about a 10-minute walk to the main Gero Onsen street (including Onsenji Temple and the Hot Spring Museum), making it a great spot for a village stroll before or after check-in. If you love historic, classic ryokans, this is absolutely the right choice in Gero.

This time, we stayed at a historic inn representative of Gero Onsen: ✨ Yunoshima-kan, Gero Onsen ✨ Standing on a hill overlooking the Gero Onsen town, Yunoshima-kan boasts a charming, historic wooden building constructed in 1931 (Showa 6). Stepping inside, you're transported to a timeless space with its imposing lobby, charming corridors, and polished staircase. While simply walking around the inn is enjoyable, we especially recommend the "Inn Stamp Rally" ✨ Collecting stamps while visiting various locations within the historic inn naturally leads you to places you might normally pass by. For dinner, we savored a kaiseki meal featuring local ingredients, including Hida beef. The cuisine enjoyed in this historic setting was truly exceptional. Aside from Nagoya, I also planned a 2-day, 1-night trip to Gero Onsen this time! It's a short journey and totally worth the money, so I'm sharing it with you guys~ Take the JR Hida Limited Express (bound for Toyama) from Nagoya Station to Gero. It only takes an hour and a half (line up at the green markings for the Hida train on Platform 11). In Gero, you can check out the Gero Gassho Village, Onsenji Temple, the Frog Shrine, eat some Gero pudding, wander around Gero Onsen Street, enjoy a foot bath, and finally, soak in the hot springs at your onsen hotel! The views from the hotels are gorgeous, making you feel completely immersed in nature~ It's such a laid-back and chill itinerary that completely relaxes your body, mind, and soul~ I'll definitely come back next time! We booked a Japanese-style room with tatami mats, equipped with all necessary amenities. The room also offers a stunning view of the Hida River, making it hard to leave. Quiet and stunning Gero in Nagoya It snows moderately, and for those who couldn't visit Shirakawago, I recommend Gero's Gassho Village. The entrance fee is 800 yen. The outdoor hot springs are fantastic, and the view is truly breathtaking. Even though it's a tourist spot, there aren't many people, so I had a relaxing and enjoyable time! Accommodation: 18,000 KRW per night for two people ✔️ Ooedo Onsen Monogatari Annex It's a tatami room without a private bathroom, but the room has a sink, toilet, tatami area, and an outdoor terrace! There are outdoor hot springs and shared bathrooms, which are spacious and not crowded, so it wasn't inconvenient. The price includes breakfast and dinner, making it a great value! There's a bus to the station, so make sure to book in advance! The food was truly delicious, which made the stay even better. ✔️ Right next to the accommodation: Hagiya Kei-chan Gero is famous for Kei-chan, a chicken dish. It's similar to chicken galbi and very tasty! We tried both miso and soy sauce flavors, made with young chicken. How about Nagoya for a winter trip instead of Sapporo? Highly recommended!

As soon as we picked up our rental car for the first leg of our Nagoya trip, we headed straight to Gero. After soaking in the hot springs, I could genuinely feel my body becoming more relaxed☺️ 🚩Travel Route Since it was a hot spring trip, we mostly stayed at the ryokan! The town is quaint and small, making it easy to explore in just half a day. 🍜Recommended Restaurant The nabe-gyu sushi sold at a small shop in front of Ogawaya Ryokan was the most delicious sushi I had during the entire Nagoya trip!! If you visit Gero, don't miss out on this and make sure to try it! 🏠Recommended Accommodation We stayed at Ogawaya Ryokan! The facilities were so large that we needed a map to navigate, and the hot spring area was also expansive, making it fun to explore. The quality of the hot spring water was excellent, and I could immediately feel my body becoming more relaxed after soaking in it! As soon as you step out of JR Gero Station, you'll find many shops promoting their "onsen" deals. Traveling alone, I not only wanted to enjoy the hot springs but also take a leisurely stroll through the traditional Japanese-style onsen town. So, I focused on gathering information about free foot baths, public baths, and day-use onsen facilities. You can pick up a map at the station! This "Beauty Bath" is said to be effective for rheumatism, neuralgia, motor function disorders, post-illness recovery, and fatigue relief. The source temperature of the spring reaches over 80°C. The free foot baths scattered throughout the streets each have unique designs, ranging from natural styles to traditional Japanese architecture and even European garden themes. If you try out all the free foot baths, you might not even need to spend money on a dedicated day-use onsen! I had a wonderful time enjoying myself without spending a dime. Remember to bring a small towel to dry your feet after the bath!

A three-hour journey brings you to Takayama, and there’s more to explore than just Takayama Old Street! Stay in one place, spend the night in Takayama, and set out from Takayama during the day. Recommended accommodations near Gero Onsen for those traveling near Nagoya 👍🏻 I visited the Yamagataya Ryokan, which is frequently mentioned when searching for Gero Ryokan on Naver! If you book in advance, you can save on transportation costs as there is a free shuttle bus from Nagoya Station to the accommodation. For an additional fee, you can reserve a private ryokan at a specific time, which was great! However, the ryokan had no windows and an open structure, which was a bit surprising for someone like me who values privacy 🤣 Both dinner and breakfast were included, and personally, I found the food delicious 👏🏻 Address: 260-1 Yunoshima, Japan Atmosphere/Facilities: Full of Japanese vibes Key Points: One of the larger Gero Onsen accommodations with reasonable pricing! Gero Onsen, one of Japan's top three hot springs! I visited Gero while traveling to Nagoya. Actually, this was my second visit. :) During my stay in Gero, I stayed at the Yamagataya Ryokan, which offers stunning river views from the rooms and serves delicious food—truly a great value accommodation! I tried breakfast, lunch, and dinner at Yamagataya. Breakfast was a clean and traditional Japanese meal, while lunch and dinner were served as kaiseki course meals. The upgraded Hida beef shabu-shabu I had for lunch was so delicious it brought tears to my eyes. 🥹🤤 The ryokan features both a large public bath and private baths, allowing you to choose according to your preference. 📌 Outdoor Hinoki Open-Air Bath 🥹 The atmosphere is absolutely amazing, and the water is hot. The bath is spacious enough for two people to enjoy comfortably. 📌 Masuya Ryokan Kaiseki Breakfast You can choose breakfast times at 7:30 AM, 8:00 AM, or 8:30 AM. The breakfast area is clean and divided into sections. The meal is a beautifully arranged set featuring noodles, rice, fish, seaweed, bulgogi, salad, and more. Nagoya - Gero Onsen - Takayama - Shirakawa-go - Tateyama Kurobe Day 1: It takes about 40 minutes to travel from Nagoya Airport to the city center, costing around ¥1000. Most restaurants close at 10 PM, while izakayas usually stay open until around midnight. On weekdays, closing times might be even later. Day 2: Purchased the Hida 3-Day Pass from JR, which includes round-trip bus tickets to Shirakawa-go (~¥12000). Visited Gero Onsen. The town was larger than expected, with shops, shrines, and everything you need. Explored Gero Gassho Village, which is relatively small with limited photo spots, but the mountain slide was very fun. Note that most restaurants are closed on Mondays, so plan accordingly. Day 3: Visited Takayama and Shirakawa-go. The bus pass needs to be exchanged in person, and staff will explain the bus schedules in detail. There were quite a lot of visitors, but about 10-20% of the shops were closed. Around 3-4 hours is sufficient to explore. Returned to Takayama and enjoyed Hida beef sukiyaki. Day 4: Spent the day exploring Takayama City, which has a nostalgic atmosphere. Strolled through the old streets and then returned to Nagoya. Day 5: Had Hida beef barbecue, visited Nagoya Castle, Osu Kannon, and Osu Shopping Street. Day 6: Joined a 2-day, 1-night local tour to Kamikochi and Tateyama Kurobe. Kamikochi is stunning with its clear mountains, majestic snowy peaks, and picturesque scenery that is truly refreshing. Day 7: Explored Tateyama Kurobe using six different modes of transportation, which took about 8 hours including sightseeing. Unfortunately, the weather was bad with strong winds and heavy rain, and the temperature dropped sharply, making it hard to enjoy photo-taking or the experience. Day 8: Visited Chubu Electric Power Museum, explored the underground shopping streets, and then headed back home.

It is very pleasant to soak your feet while enjoying the street view.  At Yuami-ya, I tasted the signature "Yuami Soft Serve Ice Cream", which combines hot spring eggs with soft serve ice cream. The taste is unique and unforgettable. In addition, there is "Heart-warming Pudding", which is kept warm in buckets in the store and tastes sweeter and smoother.  We visited the "Gero Onsen Gassho Village", where many traditional Gassho-style buildings are gathered, making people feel like traveling through time and experiencing the ancient Japanese rural life. This time, I came to Yunoshimakan, a hot spring hotel located in the heart of Gero Fuji, which feels like a time travel experience. The entrance, corridors, and the three-story wooden building all exude a strong sense of history. Did you know? This place was registered as a national tangible cultural property in 2010! Walking on the creaky wooden floors, I felt the passage of time and the weight of history. A Picture-Perfect View 🖼️ My room faced the Gero Onsen Street, and when I opened the window, a beautiful view unfolded before my eyes. In the morning, a light mist gently covered the street, as if draping a mysterious veil over the ancient town. In the evening, the afterglow of the sunset bathed the mountains, turning the world into a warm orange-red. Every moment of the scenery was mesmerizing. A Relaxing Hot Spring Experience ♨️ The hot spring experience is a must-try here! The hot spring water at Yunoshimakan comes from mountain springs, clear and warm. Soaking in the hot spring, feeling the water gently caress my skin, all my fatigue and worries seemed to vanish. It was an indescribable pleasure! A Feast for the Taste Buds 🍱 When it comes to food, Yunoshimakan will not disappoint. Dinner is a traditional multi-course kaiseki meal, with each dish being exquisite and delicious, leaving a lasting impression.
