On the outbound flight, we had a 2-hour layover in Guangzhou, and on the return flight, a 2-hour layover in Shenzhen. We flew with China Southern Airlines, which included meals, drinks, and 23 kg of checked baggage. 🏖️Must-Visit Attractions 1. Central Street / Zhongyang Pedestrian Street (中央大街): A historic European-style pedestrian street. 2. St. Sophia Cathedral (圣索菲亚大教堂): A famous Russian Orthodox church. 3. Sun Island Scenic Area (太阳岛风景区): Sun Island, known for its snow sculpture displays. But when we went, the ice festival had already ended, so we took the cable car to enjoy the view of the still-frozen river. 4. Songhua River (松花江): A river that turns into an icy playground for winter activities. 6. Laodaowai Baroque Block (中华巴洛克历史文化街区): An old town district with Baroque-style architecture. 6. Once, a Russian engineer lived here, who in 1924 paved Harbin's Arbat with the famous cobblestones (the very ones that, according to legend, cost a silver dollar each). In honor of this man's contributions, the place where he lived was renamed after him. However, finding information about him turned out to be quite a challenge—some sources refer to him as Komtrad Shock, while a more plausible version of his name is Komtrachuk. The Russian internet and articles about Harbin seem to have no record of his name! This surprised me, and I suspect that the name might not be Komtrachuk but Kondrachuk. Ultimately, I couldn't find a biographical article about the man who, by the way, created the longest pedestrian street in Asia! Today I decided to take a day without a GPS and just stroll along Zhongyang Street (中央大街), a pedestrian street often compared by locals to Moscow's Arbat. And you know, there really is a resemblance—but with a vibrant oriental flair!✨ 📍Where is it? Zhongyang Dajie Street is in the center of Harbin. It stretches for a whopping 1.4 km from Defenders of the Soviet Union Square to the Songhua River. 🚇 How to get there? Take Line 2 of the metro to Zhongyang Dajie Station. A single ride costs between ¥2 and ¥5. You walk past the buildings and find yourself wondering: where am I? There are Baroque mansions, Byzantine domes, and Chinese signs with hieroglyphs. But there's actually a city in China famous for its "world-class snow" and one of the most spectacular ice festivals in the world: Harbin, a major city in northern China, near Russia. This was my first time visiting Harbin. To be honest, before coming, I didn't know what to expect, other than that it would be extremely cold and there would be a famous ice village. But in reality, I found the city to be more charming than I imagined. It boasts European-style architecture, Russian-influenced cuisine, and a snowy atmosphere that feels like something out of a fairytale. This 7-day trip was a relaxed one, allowing me to experience the main landmarks, winter activities, and the famous snow villages of China. ⸻ Day 1 – Arriving in Harbin, a city that feels like Europe in the middle of the snow After many hours on the plane, I finally arrived in Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang Province. The first thing I noticed upon leaving the airport was the extreme cold. The temperature during my visit was around -15 to -20 degrees Celsius; my breath turned to condensation. After checking into my hotel, I started my trip by strolling along Zhongyang Street. This street is considered Harbin's most famous pedestrian street. The streets are lined with old European and Russian-style buildings, creating a distinctly different atmosphere from other cities in China. As you walk along, you'll find: · Chinese restaurants · Russian pastry shops · Cafes · Souvenir shops One thing I had to try, as recommended by the locals, was the Russian ice cream bar, sold at many stalls on this street. It might sound strange given the sub-zero temperatures, but it's very popular among Harbin locals. It was a unique experience. At night, the street is beautifully lit, creating a very romantic atmosphere. ⸻ Day 2 – City Landmarks The next morning, I started by visiting Harbin's most important landmark: Saint Sophia Cathedral. Built in 1907 by Russians, this Orthodox Christian church boasts striking architecture. During winter, the river freezes over, and locals come out to walk, play in the snow, or do various activities. ⸻ Day 3 – The Highlight of the Trip: The World-Class Ice City One of the reasons tourists from all over the world visit Harbin is the Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival. Went to the famous Siberian Tiger Park in Harbin hoping for a thrilling bus ride feed, but the tigers were completely uninterested! Spoiled by too much food, I guess. So, feeding time happened the old-fashioned way through the fence via a little delivery box. POV: You are the delivery driver for a very, hungry customer.
