[Hida-Furukawa: On the Trail of "Your Name"] Before traveling to Japan, back when the borders were still closed, I happened to watch the anime "Kimi no Na wa" (known in English as "Your Name"). I know I'm pretty late to the party since it blew up years ago. I'm not exactly sure why I wanted to come here so badly, but I just had to squeeze Hida-Furukawa into my itinerary. While researching the route, I realized I had to pass through Takayama anyway. It's a super famous city, but I had never included it in my plans before. This time, I planned to head down from Shirakawa-go and spend the night in Takayama so I'd have time to explore in the morning. It was freezing cold on the day I arrived because of a light snowfall, which I could tell from the white patches of unmelted snow. Instead of sticking to my original plan of exploring Takayama in the morning, I decided to head straight to Hida-Furukawa. Hida-Furukawa is a small, quiet town. You can pretty much cover the whole place with a one-hour walk. If you're into vintage vibes and history, you should definitely try to fit this town into your travel plans. The canals around the town are filled with massive koi fish swimming about. Since it wasn't quite full-blown winter yet when I visited, the local authorities hadn't relocated the fish for the season. The local shrines still feature traditional wooden architecture, having been carefully restored over time rather than completely rebuilt. Even the train station retains its classic look with its original wooden structure intact. As for the iconic spot featured in the anime, the local authorities have been super cooperative. They keep that specific window open and even set up a photo stand for visitors to pose on. Plus, there are maps available in multiple languages. Feeling hungry and wanting to make it back to Takayama by 2 PM, I stopped by a soba shop... not one of the highly recommended ones (I just liked the storefront and was too lazy to keep walking). Besides its famous Hida beef, Hida-Furukawa is also known for its herbs. The sign out front claimed that their dishes are primarily made with local herbs. Thanks to the massive hype around "Kimi no Na wa" a few years ago, tourist brochures and restaurant menus are available in English, making it incredibly easy to navigate. If you're an indie traveler who isn't just checking off mainstream tourist traps, I highly recommend coming here to take a deep breath of the fresh, pure air.

The Woryu Sakura in Ichinomiya, estimated to be about 1100 years old, is a massive cherry tree whose name means "Crouching Dragon Cherry Tree." Its wide, drooping branches are said to resemble a dragon lying on the ground. On the way to Shirakawa-kami, you'll definitely pass through the old town of Takayama Hida, so I stopped by to stroll around and stretch my legs. There are some must-try foods like Hida dumplings, Hida milk, and Hida beef sushi. I loved the sushi the most. The milk tasted pretty much the same as what you get in city convenience stores, nothing particularly different, but you can try them all. #January Destinations 2026 Hida no Sato (Hida Folk Village) Simply put, it's a Gassho-zukuri village relatively close to the city. It contains many ancient buildings from the Hida region and displays showcasing the lives of people from that era. It's beautiful when it snows in winter, but extremely cold, so be sure to dress warmly. There are buses, but they are infrequent, so driving is highly recommended. It's a 5-10 minute drive from Takayama City. Sometimes there are illumination events, but unfortunately, I didn't see any when I visited at the end of December. Overall, I highly recommend visiting.

How did I end up falling in love with Takayama over and over again like this? Takayama, an ancient town nestled in the mountains of the Hida region, is one of my absolute favorite places in Japan. A small town overflowing with charm—so much that I had to come back for the second time. This trip was at the end of April, and I was secretly hoping to catch some sakura. Luckily, the cherry blossoms bloomed late this year, so I still got to see a few here and there. If I had come just a little later, I probably would've missed them entirely. Blessed with good luck again! The weather this time fluctuated quite a bit because it was right between seasons, but during the days I visited, it stayed chilly—both day and night—feeling like around 15°C. Takayama is located in Gifu Prefecture, in the Chubu region, just a 2-hour drive from Nagoya. Coming by train or bus is also super convenient—you can depart directly from Nagoya. Because it's so close to Nagoya, Takayama is one of the top destinations for travelers visiting the Chubu region.
