#bucketlistdestinations Garden of the Gods in Shawnee National Forest is famous for its sandstone formations, but I came for the Mossy Trail—a 0.5-mile loop that winds through a forest of beech and maple, with a thick carpet of moss on the north-facing slopes. Entrance is free (no day-use fee), and the trailhead has a large parking lot (free, but fills by 10 am on weekends). The trail is mostly flat, but the moss hides tree roots—I wore hiking shoes and watched my step. I carried 1 liter of water; there’s a water fountain at the nearby picnic area, but not on the trail. A forest ranger told me the moss is a sign of clean air—“if the moss dies, the forest is in trouble.” Kindness beat: a local artist was painting the mossy rocks and offered to share her watercolor set—“the moss here is the color of hope. It grows where nothing else will.” My take: Garden of the Gods is a reminder that “small” details matter. The moss on the rocks is just as beautiful as the sandstone formations. Should we prioritize “iconic” views over “hidden” ones in national forests?

Ready to explore beyond the usual Chicago tourist spots? 👀 Day 2 is all about dinosaurs, Pokémon, incredible neighborhood food, quirky shops, horror, taxidermy, local bakeries, and some genuine hidden gems. This is a GREAT itinerary if you want to see a completely different side of Chicago! 🏙️ 🍵 Start with matcha at Foxtrot Market Start the morning in River North with a matcha from Foxtrot Market before hopping on the CTA and heading south toward Museum Campus. 🦖 Spend the morning at the Field Museum Give yourself PLENTY of time for the Field Museum because this place is absolutely massive. You could easily spend hours wandering through its exhibits. Some highlights include Ancient Americas, The Changing Face of Science, Regenstein Halls of the Pacific, Abbott Hall of Conservation: Restoring Earth, Native Truths: Our Voices, Our Stories, and the incredible Griffin Halls of Evolving Planet, where you’ll find Chicago icon SUE the T. rex! 🦖 And, of course… Pokémon. ⚡️ The Pokémon Fossil Museum is a must for Pokémon fans. It uses Pokémon alongside real-world fossils to teach you about paleontology, fossilization, and excavation. Seeing Pokémon fossils compared with actual prehistoric specimens is such a fun concept! 🎟️ Important: You’ll need a separate timed ticket, so BOOK IN ADVANCE! Even with limited admission, the exhibit space itself is fairly small and can get crowded — especially with lots of excited kids — but it’s absolutely worth checking out. 🍌 Take the CTA to Ukrainian Village for a jibarito Now for one of my favorite food discoveries of the trip: Smash Jibarito! A jibarito replaces the bread of a traditional sandwich with crispy fried plantains, and the result is delicious. 🤤 The jibarito here was one of the best and most interesting takes on a “burger” I’ve ever had. If you want to try something you probably aren’t eating every day back home, PUT THIS ON YOUR LIST. 💩 Make a pilgrimage to the St Fountain Yes. The St Fountain. 😂 This is absolutely a “we’re nearby, so why not?” attraction, but that’s exactly what makes it fun. Stop by, take your obligatory photo, send it to your friends with zero context, and continue on your way. 🥐 Try Kasama… if you planned ahead! The acclaimed Filipino bakery and restaurant Kasama is right around the corner. If this is high on your list, plan ahead! We arrived to find a line stretching down the street and unfortunately had to skip it. 😭 🥧 Get a local slice at Hoosier Mama Pie Company Time for first dessert! Hoosier Mama Pie Company has tons of delicious and often seasonal flavors. It feels like the kind of neighborhood bakery you hope to stumble across while traveling, so grab a slice and see what’s available that day. 🥧 🚇 Find the perfect souvenir at Transit Tees Public transit nerds, this one is for you. 🚇 Transit Tees has tons of Chicago-inspired designs and CTA-themed merch that make for MUCH more interesting keepsakes than another generic Chicago magnet. 🥐 Make another bakery stop at Mindy’s Still capable of eating? Excellent. Stop at Mindy’s Bakery for another sweet treat. 🍪 If you happen to visit toward the end of the day, check out the remaining pastry selection — we found pastries discounted 50% before closing, which made this stop even sweeter. 🔪 Enter horror heaven at The Brewed Horror fans NEED to check out The Brewed. ☕️🩸 This horror-themed café is packed with creepy decor and themed drinks, making it one of the coolest coffee shops we found in Chicago. 💿 Browse Bric-a-Brac Records Conveniently, Bric-a-Brac Records is right next door! Flip through their huge selection of old and new records and enjoy all the wonderfully weird stuff packed into the shop. 🦋 Discover one of Chicago’s coolest hidden gems: The Insect Asylum DO. NOT. SKIP. THIS. PLACE. The Insect Asylum is a taxidermy museum filled with fascinating specimens, insects, bones, oddities, and even LIVE animals. 🦎🕷️🐢 We saw a tortoise, birds, iguanas, tarantulas, and tons of incredible taxidermy. Tickets were $25 when we visited, and somehow we had the entire museum to ourselves for about an hour! It was peaceful, fascinating, a little bizarre, and the perfect escape from the Chicago summer heat. Easily one of the biggest hidden gems of the trip. 💯 🍜 Dinner at Akahoshi Ramen After all that exploring, head to Akahoshi Ramen for dinner. My order: Aburasoba + Extra Shio Koji Chicken Breast. The noodles were insanely flavorful and the chicken was SO good. This was easily one of my favorite meals of the day and a fantastic way to end an afternoon of exploring the neighborhoods. 🍦 Dessert at Pretty Cool Ice Cream Except we’re obviously not actually done eating. Right across the street is Pretty Cool Ice Cream, an adorable shop specializing in creative ice cream bars! I got the Caramel Horchata Crunch and it was to die for. 🍦 🎬 BONUS: End the night with a 4DX movie Still have energy? Head to Regal City North and see something in 4DX! 🎥💨💦 If you’ve never experienced one, 4DX turns the movie into basically a theme park ride with moving seats and physical effects synchronized with what’s happening on screen. It’s a chaotic and extremely fun way to end the night. ✨ DAY 2 COMPLETE! ✨ This day takes you away from some of the biggest downtown attractions and into a completely different Chicago — incredible neighborhood restaurants, independent businesses, weird roadside-style attractions, horror, museums, and some of the best food of the trip. 🚇 Tip: The CTA makes this itinerary very doable without a car, but you’ll be moving through several different neighborhoods, so give yourself plenty of time and don’t feel like you need to hit every single stop. The 6,000-square-foot Hangar One at Clow International Airport is the setting for this museum open on Saturdays. From this period there’s a Fokker E.III, a Nieuport 11 and a Nieuport 12. Later models include a Douglas A-4 Skyhawk, a North American T2 Buckeye, two North American T-33s, a homebuilt Jungster II and a UH-1C Huey gunship, made famous by the Vietnam War. This historic house museum, operated by the Palatine Historical Society, is on the south side of the Community Park. The property, named after a 19th-century occupant and member of the Palatine Board of Trustees, was built in 1873 in a refined Second Empire style. True to that French style, the house has a mansard roof. The town of Douglas is a 70-minute drive from Cairns. The road from Cairns to Douglas is called Xiaoyang Road. This quiet road is not a wide road, one side of the mountain, one side by the sea, the trees are shaded, if you look closely These trees will find that they grow almost different. A tree is intricately rooted, almost more than a thousand years of history, because the rain and sunshine are full, exudes a refreshing green, almost green. This gift of nature is amazing. If you return to Cairns from Douglas, the green is getting shallower and shallower, and then to the Gold Coast, the surrounding trees can only be described by sparse pull. Compared with the US Highway No. 1, although the road is narrow and can not be parked casually, Xiaoyang Road makes people feel more quiet and natural.

We traveled from Illinois to the Royalton Bávaro in Punta Cana and stayed for 7 nights in a Diamond Club 1-bedroom suite with our two daughters. The balcony offered a stunning ocean view. Ramon, our butler, was incredibly attentive and amazing. On the first night, he escorted us to our room, and when I mentioned I loved champagne and white wine, he delivered both while I was still unpacking! Every morning, he texted us to check our plans and helped arrange dinner reservations, always securing our preferred times and restaurants. Our favorite spot during the stay was the Diamond Club cabanas and pool. They were never crowded, and the service was always fantastic at both spots! There are vendors on the beach, but a simple "no thank you" and they move on. Be sure to find Jimmy on the beach for excursions! We truly believe the upgrade to Diamond Club was absolutely worth it, and we wouldn’t hesitate to do it again!

Spring in Illinois arrives unexpectedly. Bare branches sprout tender buds overnight, and trails that were still frozen stiff in February are covered with birdsong and wildflowers by March. From downtown Chicago to the southern Shawnee National Forest, each of these parks is a masterpiece of spring. Starved Rock State Park Along the Illinois River, 18 sandstone canyons welcome waterfall season in spring. When April rains are abundant, water cascades down the rock walls, and wildflowers carpet the canyon floors. It’s about a 1.5-hour drive southwest from Chicago; it’s best to arrive early on weekends. Matthiessen State Park Right next to Starved Rock but much less crowded. In spring, waterfalls roar, and trails wind through sandstone cliffs and cedar forests. Paths can be slippery after rain, so wear waterproof boots. The canyon system stretches about 5 miles and feels wilder than its neighbor. Garden of the Gods Recreation Area At the southernmost tip of Illinois, about a 4-hour drive from Chicago. Sandstone formations rise above the early spring green forest, with Camel Rock and Anvil Rock along short trails. Wildflowers bloom across the ground in April—definitely worth a visit. Chicago Botanic Garden 385 acres with 27 themed gardens, spring is the highlight. Tulips, cherry blossoms, and the Japanese Garden’s pink and white petals bloom from April through May. Morton Arboretum 1,700 acres, a living tree museum. In spring, crabapple blossoms cover the grounds, creating a pink tunnel effect when walking beneath. Weekend visits require timed-entry reservations. Anderson Japanese Garden Rockford, one of North America’s top Japanese gardens. Spring features cherry blossoms, Japanese maples, and koi ponds, with every stone and water feature carefully designed. Open mid to late April, guided tours available by appointment. Cantigny Park Wheaton, 500 acres. Former estate of the Chicago Tribune publisher, spring fills the park with tulips, pansies, and flowering trees. Many people picnic on the lawns. Parking fees apply. Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie South of Wilmington, once a military manufacturing site, now restored to nearly 10,000 acres of prairie. Wildflowers bloom first in spring, and the bison herd reintroduced in 2015 grazes in the distance. About 40 miles south of Chicago. Illinois Beach State Park Near Zion, with 6 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, preserving Illinois’ last natural sand dunes. Grass greens up in spring, migratory birds pass through, and the lake is expansive. Best birdwatching in April and May. Lincoln Park Conservatory Built in 1895, the glass conservatory’s spring flower show is a city highlight. Four permanent exhibition rooms are always lush and green. Free admission, but timed-entry reservations are required. Garfield Park Conservatory West Side, one of the world’s largest conservatories. The spring flower show changes themes in the display hall, while the fern room and aroid house remain cool and humid year-round. Free for Chicago residents; non-residents must purchase tickets. Allerton Park and Retreat Center Monticello, 1,500 acres including formal gardens, woodland trails, and outdoor sculptures. Perennials and flowering trees are in full bloom in spring. Free admission, about 25 miles west of Champaign. From southern rock formations to northern dunes, from Chicago’s conservatories to prairie bison herds, pick one near you and head out this weekend.
