Platanias — The Greek Village Where the Beach Meets the Olive Groves and the Sea Breeze Never Stops
Greece has Chania and Rethymno. But on the northwest coast of Crete lies a village that has kept its easygoing charm and its long sandy beach. Platanias is a small settlement of whitewashed houses, a beach lined with tavernas, and a landscape of olive groves and turquoise water. The village is lively in summer but quiet in spring and autumn. Here is how to explore this hidden Greek gem and save money with Trip.com.
1. The Beach at Dawn: Sand and Silence
Platanias's beach is a long curve of golden sand backed by olive groves, with clear turquoise water. By 10 AM, the day-trippers arrive. Come at 6 AM instead. The sand is smooth. The sea is glass. You will walk along the shore with only the sound of waves and the cry of gulls. It feels like a place where time has stood still.
Pro Tip: Download the Trip.com offline map for Platanias. It shows you the quietest routes along the beach and the hidden viewpoints. The best photos are from the northern end at sunrise, when the water glows.
2. The Village: A Walk Through History
Platanias's village is a mix of whitewashed houses, tavernas, and small hotels that line the beach road. The streets are quiet. The pace is slow. Walk through the village. The details are everywhere — carved doors, wooden balconies, and hidden courtyards.
Money Hack: The village is free to walk. Skip the expensive guided tours. Pick up a map from the visitor center and explore on your own. Check Trip.com for a "Platanias Village Walk" that includes the beach and the old village.
3. The Olive Groves: A Taste of Crete
Platanias is surrounded by olive groves, which have been cultivated here for centuries. The olives are pressed into oil in local mills, and the oil is golden and fragrant. The farmers are proud of their craft. Come in the afternoon. The light is golden, and the groves are peaceful.
Budget Advice: Skip the expensive souvenir shops. Buy olive oil directly from a local farmer or mill. Check Trip.com for a "Platanias Olive Trail" that shows you the best producers and the quietest times to visit.
4. Food That Tastes Like Crete
Cretan food is hearty and fresh. Try Dakos — a barley rusk topped with tomatoes and cheese. Order Grilled Octopus — tender and smoky, served with lemon. And do not miss Baklava — layers of phyllo, nuts, and honey.
Where to Eat: Skip the expensive restaurants on the waterfront. Walk into the side streets and find Taverna Platanias or To Limani, where locals eat. The food is authentic, and the prices are fair. Check Trip.com for set menu deals — some places include a glass of local wine when you book through the app.
Where to Stay?
Book on Trip.com a guesthouse in the village. Look for something near the beach or the olive groves. You will sleep in a whitewashed room with a balcony, a view of the sea, and the scent of thyme. The evenings are quiet, and the stars are bright.
Conclusion:
Platanias is not a place you rush through. It is a place you breathe in. It is a village of sandy beaches and olive groves, of whitewashed lanes and quiet courtyards. It is a place where the sea breeze never stops. Greece is a country of islands and ancient wonders, but Platanias is its Cretan soul. Come and walk the beach at dawn. The sea is waiting.

good value dishes
Amongst the few places that had affordable eating options. Things tasted nice and were not overly priced for tourists. Quality of food is nice. All the items are tasty and worth for their price. Food delivery time is also fast. I went there one week before, and I was treated with smile and nice hello.
Staff was very kind and cooperative. Place was clean too. There were other guests too enjoying there. If you are someone who loves pizza more than you love your life you must try their olive garlic and cheeze pizza planked on a crispy thin crust with some toothsome flavor of cheeze and olive.

Place in Adelaide to be
Highly recommend this place if you visit Adelaide. Adelaide is a home to beautiful beaches, nice hotels, trams, 2 universities, a sports playground called Adelaide Oval, a museum, Adelaide Zoo and many more. Watch out for fun activities around Rundle Mall if you are around. The hotels are cheaper compared with other cities and there are many options for food.
