Hotels start at $15. You can crash here for the night or head straight out. 4⃣ Cusco → Hydroelectric station (Hidroeléctrica) - take a bus or minivan (≈7 hours, but the drive is incredibly scenic). Prices start at $15 (12Go or RedBus are great for finding tickets). 5⃣ Hike 12 km to Aguas Calientes — it’s about a 3-hour walk along the river and the train tracks. Here's how you could spend your day: No need to get up early, like most places in Peru, Lima seems to wake up pleasantly slowly. Start in historic center to visit Basílica and Convent of San Francisco, Basilica and Convent of Santo Domingo and Casa de la Literatura Peruana. While walking, breakfast on fresh churros from one of the local vendors before popping int the (free) Museo Municipal Prehispánico. At noon, watch change of guards at Palacio de Gobierno de la República del Perú. For lunch taxi to Miraflores and eat at El Bodegón. Walk over to the pyramids of Pucllana and join the informative and entertaining guided tour of this unique archeological site. Walk to the joint Parque 7 de Junio and Parque John F. Kennedy where you can try to cuddle some for the many aloof cats enjoying their comfortable day there. Right next to the parks is the liveliest part of Miraflores. Snack on picarones in the park, or head over to Helarte for cake, pancake or waffles; but be aware that the portions are massive. For the evening, taxi to Barranco. A wonderful week-long trip to Peru during spring break in March. On March 9th, I flew from Hartford to Atlanta and transferred to Quito, the capital of Ecuador, where I stayed overnight. On March 10th, I flew to Lima, the capital of Peru, and then to Cusco in the evening. I checked into the Wyndham Hotel and met with the owner of the travel agency. I paid $500 for two people and learned about the general itinerary. On March 11th, at around 6:40 am, a car picked us up from the hotel lobby to start the Sacred Valley day tour. We visited the Chinchero traditional textile market, Moray archaeological terraces, Maras salt mines, and Ollantaytambo Sanctuary. After lunch, we skipped the Pisac Sanctuary and took a train directly to the foot of Machu Picchu Mountain. In the evening, the Machu Picchu day tour group contacted us at the hotel and explained the itinerary for the next day. On March 12th, at 7:00 am, we gathered in the plaza and queued for the 8:00 am bus that took us to the Machu Picchu Sanctuary. We spent about half a day exploring the entire Machu Picchu city. At noon, we took the bus back down the mountain and had lunch. After lunch, we took the train back to Ollantaytambo and then a car back to Cusco. By the time we checked into the hotel, it was already dusk. On March 13th, I visited the Twelve-Angled Stone, the Temple of the Sun, and the Plaza de Armas in the morning. All of these sites are located near the Wyndham Hotel, making them easy to visit. At noon, I took a plane to Lima. After taking the airport bus to the Crowne Plaza Hotel, I visited the Plaza del Amor, the Bridge of Sighs in Barranco, and the Graffiti Wall. On March 14th, I took a DiDi to Plaza San Martín, which is very close to the Plaza de Armas. On the way to the Plaza de Armas, there were many people in yellow vests offering currency exchange. Their exchange rates were much higher than the bank's, so I exchanged a small amount. I felt like I had lost a lot of money because I had exchanged currency at the bank beforehand. At 12:00 pm, I witnessed the changing of the guard ceremony at the Government Palace. Near the Government Palace, there were people holding signs offering sightseeing tours by bus. We each paid 20 soles to participate in this city tour. It was worth seeing and covered the main attractions in the city center. In the evening, I went to the Fountain Park to admire the fountain plaza, which is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. On March 15th, I took an early morning flight. After retrieving our luggage from the hotel, we took a DiDi to the airport. DiDi International is very convenient and affordable, but you need to pay in cash, so be sure to have soles on hand. The drivers were all very friendly. Some spoke English, while others only spoke Spanish. However, I was able to understand some things through body language. In conclusion, Cusco, Machu Picchu, and Lima in Peru are all worth visiting.

2024.08.31 Today I walked around downtown Lima and recorded my itinerary and experience for the whole day. After a hearty breakfast at the hotel in the morning, we started our exploration of Lima’s old town. The first stop is the Basilica and Convent of San Francisco, a 16th-century church known for its Baroque architecture and catacombs. It is one of Lima’s most historic religious sites. However, we only went into the church next door, and did not go into the museum part which required payment. Next, we strolled around the Plaza Mayor de Lima, which is the historical center of Lima and is surrounded by important buildings such as the Presidential Palace, City Hall, and the Cathedral. We accidentally discovered a free museum, Museo Central - MUCEN. The exhibitions inside exceeded our expectations. Many precious collections about Peruvian history and culture were displayed. For free travelers who want to learn about local culture, this is a place not to be missed. Next, we walked over to eat Churros, Churros Virgen del Carmen S.A.C! When you go there, you will see two queues. You have to queue up to buy tickets first, and then queue up on the other side after buying the tickets. Fortunately, I don’t have two people, so one person goes to pay and the other one queues to get Churros. We ordered the caramel-flavored Manjar Blanco, which is delicious! One ticket costs 3.5sol (about NT$30). In fact, if we had known this earlier, we should have lined up early in the morning near the Basilica of St. Francis and the Convento de San Francisco, because there were not many people at that time! Because when I was queuing I realized that was where we were going to get off the taxi! Afterwards, we went to the Inka Market which was recommended by many people. We thought there would be many unique handicrafts, but in fact the types of goods there were very uniform, which made it a bit boring to visit. In the end, we left without buying anything. In comparison, I prefer the things I saw in Cusco or Pisac before, which had richer texture and choices. Next, we went to Al Toke Pez for lunch and ordered a takeout combo, which included a small portion of seafood fried rice, ceviche and fried squid for only 30 sol (about NT$250). My friend and I both agreed that the fried rice was delicious, but the ceviche was a bit sour. However, the price and portion are very reasonable, I really recommend it! In the afternoon, we went to the Barranco district with a strong artistic atmosphere. We first went to Dédalo, where there are many exquisite handicrafts and design products. The prices are slightly higher, but the quality is quite good. Afterwards, we had a cup of coffee at Caleta Dolsa Coffee and enjoyed some relaxing time. Finally, we accidentally walked into a weekend market and couldn’t help buying more stones. I felt like I was about to become a stone collector! Today’s trip in Lima was really fulfilling and enjoyable. Tomorrow will be our last day in Peru! Happy times always pass by so quickly. The journey is coming to an end.
