🇲🇳 I Almost Lost More Than Money in Mongolia… But This Day Trip Was Still 100% Worth It
If you’re visiting Ulaanbaatar, there’s one place that should be at the top of your itinerary—Gorkhi-Terelj National Park.
But before you go, there’s one thing I wish someone had warned me about.
Our day trip was filled with breathtaking scenery, horseback and camel rides, traditional Mongolian culture, and unforgettable memories. Unfortunately, we also lost around US$300 in cash, believed to have been stolen by pickpockets during the journey. It didn’t ruin the trip, but it definitely reminded us to stay alert wherever we travel.
Here’s everything you should know before booking this amazing adventure.
📍 Journey from Ulaanbaatar
We booked a one-day guided tour with hotel pickup. After leaving the busy streets of Ulaanbaatar in a comfortable tourist van, the city gradually disappeared behind us. The drive took around 2 hours, passing endless grasslands, rolling hills, grazing horses, and dramatic granite rock formations. Even the road trip itself felt like part of the experience.
📍 What We Experienced
✔️ Visited the stunning Gorkhi-Terelj National Park, one of Mongolia’s most famous natural attractions.
✔️ Explored the beautiful mountain landscapes and peaceful pine forests.
✔️ Stayed inside a traditional Mongolian Ger (Yurt) and learned about the local nomadic lifestyle.
✔️ Enjoyed an unforgettable camel ride across the vast open steppe.
✔️ Saw majestic golden eagles up close and experienced Mongolia’s rich eagle hunting culture.
✔️ Visited local temples and enjoyed spectacular panoramic views surrounded by unique granite rock formations.
Every stop felt different, offering a perfect mix of nature, culture, and adventure.
💰 Travel Tips
· Booking a guided tour from Ulaanbaatar is the easiest option if you’re visiting for the first time.
· Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a jacket, as the weather can change quickly even during summer.
· Carry some cash, but avoid keeping all your money in one place.
· Be extra careful with your belongings. We lost approximately US$300 in cash during the trip, most likely due to pickpocketing. Keep your passport, wallet, and valuables in a secure cross-body bag or hidden money pouch.
⭐ Final Verdict
Despite the unfortunate incident, I would 100% recommend visiting Gorkhi-Terelj National Park.
The scenery is unlike anywhere else I’ve been—vast grasslands, towering rock formations, peaceful forests, traditional Mongolian culture, and genuine hospitality all in a single day.
Sometimes travel isn’t perfect, but those unexpected moments become part of the story. Stay alert, protect your valuables, and you’ll leave with unforgettable memories of one of Mongolia’s most beautiful destinations.
