Arrive at the visitor center before 9 AM, take the cable car to Tianyuan Difang, where the sea of clouds is most likely. In the afternoon, head down to Tangyu Town for a hot spring soak to ease sore legs. Famen Temple’s Buddhist cultural area feels more like a large park. The underground palace and the He Shi relic pagoda are worth seeing, but don’t buy incense or candles outside the scenic area—they’re expensive and not allowed inside. Guanshan Grassland is perfect for an overnight stay. Watch the stars at night and ride horses during the day. Bring a thick jacket; it’s only 15°C at night. Dongshan Wind is a local summer retreat. The roads are narrow and winding, so new drivers should be cautious. Experienced drivers can drive right to the edge of the meadow. 2️⃣ Dongguan | Guangdong Many don’t know Dongguan offers summer escapes too. After 5 PM, cross the Humen Bridge. The sea breeze is strong, the lighting is perfect, and you can capture the sunset through the bridge towers. ⚠️ The speed limit on the bridge is 80 km/h. Don’t stop on the bridge. For views, use the walkway next to the Sea Battle Museum under the bridge. After sunset, visit the Weiyuan Fort ruins. It’s free but closes at 6 PM, so arrive 30 minutes early. At night, go to Xinwan Seafood Street in Humen Town. The signature dish is salt and pepper mantis shrimp. Expect to spend about 70 per person to eat until full. 🚄 It takes only 17 minutes by high-speed train from Guangzhou South Station to Humen Station, then a 10-minute taxi to under the bridge. 3️⃣ Baicheng | Jilin Da’an Nenjiang Bay Tourist Area is at its greenest in August with lush reeds. The 8 AM trip is the most comfortable; the sun isn’t strong yet, and the water is cool. The bamboo raft ride lasts 1.5 hours, ending at Wuyi Palace. From there, walk straight to Song Street and try the guangbing flatbread stuffed with smoked goose. In the afternoon, skip Tianyou Peak—it’s crowded and steep. Instead, visit the Dahongpao Scenic Area. Walk the Rock Bone and Flower Fragrance trail, a two-hour flat route shaded by tea trees, with the scent of rock tea in the air. ⏰ After 5 PM, go to Zhizhi Temple. It’s less crowded, and the red walls and green tiles with the sunset make for great photos. Tickets and bamboo raft rides must be booked a day in advance on the official account. During summer, same-day tickets are almost impossible to get. 5️⃣ Wenzhou | Zhejiang Between Yandang Mountain and Nanxi River, I recommend Yandang because August is typhoon season, and Nanxi River’s water level affects rafting. The mountain silhouette looks like a couple embracing, but you must listen to a guide to understand it; otherwise, it’s just a pile of rocks. During the day, walk to Dalongqiu Waterfall. The water flow is less than in spring, but the mist is still refreshing. 🚄 It’s a 15-minute taxi ride from Yandangshan Station to the scenic area. If you have half a day, visit Liu Bowen’s hometown, Wuyang Village in Nantian Town. The old houses are free to enter, the environment is quiet, and it’s perfect for sipping tea and relaxing all afternoon. 6️⃣ Harbin | Heilongjiang In August, Harbin requires long sleeves in the morning and evening. Tickets cost over 100 yuan, but inside is just one ice sculpture hall. It’s not worth it. Better to visit in winter. 7️⃣ Xilingol League | Inner Mongolia Ulagai Grassland is the filming location of Wolf Totem. By late August, the grass starts to yellow, but that’s when it’s most photogenic with gold and green patches. Drive from Bayin Hushuo Town into the grassland. The roads are mostly dirt, so an SUV is a must. Peony Valley’s flowers are past their peak, so don’t waste time. Go straight to Jiubowan. Climb the viewing platform at dusk. The river looks like a silver ribbon in the sunset. Stay overnight in a yurt for 200 yuan, including breakfast. Wake up at midnight to watch the Milky Way. Gas stations are 100 km apart, so fill up whenever you see one. 8️⃣ Changde | Hunan Taohuayuan Tourist Area has a somewhat old-fashioned name, but it’s really cool in August. Walk the plank road in Qin Valley. The sound of the stream drowns out the cicadas, and the perceived temperature is 5°C lower than outside. Rent a boat on Wuliu Lake in the afternoon.
