From Ali, follow G317 Sichuan-Tibet North Route eastward to Luhuo County. The original plan was to continue along G317 to Markang, completing the full Sichuan-Tibet North Route. Due to time constraints, we turned onto G350 Panda Avenue, heading toward Kangding and Chengdu. Leaving Luhuo, we entered Songlinkou in Daofu County. Between the valley’s winding curves, we encountered this highly recognizable stone watchtower viewing platform, perfect for a short break during a self-drive trip. The entire watchtower is built from natural stone slabs, showcasing strong Tibetan architectural style. The walls are carved with sculptures of marmots climbing upward, a unique symbol of this area. The site includes a pine forest food station, a traditional stone carving workshop, and other Tibetan-style stone houses. There is also a “Marmot Home” open for visits, making it a great stop for families. Behind the watchtower lies an endless stretch of pristine coniferous forest. Dark green trees cover the hillside, while distant plateau mountains extend in layers. Flowing clouds drift across the clear blue sky, offering a wide-open view. From the viewing platform, you can see G350 National Highway winding along the mountain, twisting through the forested valleys. Next to the highway stands a group of Tibetan white stupas. The main stupa is tall and slender, surrounded by smaller ones. The white structures are decorated with delicate paintings. These Buddhist stupas represent local faith. Please drive quietly and respect local customs when passing by. This place has no noisy commercial development—just a small, off-the-beaten-path viewing platform by the highway, rarely crowded. Traveling through western Sichuan, many travelers focus on popular lakes and snow mountains, often missing unexpected roadside scenery. These mountain stops often hold surprising delights along the journey.
