My first desert hike was on a beginner-friendly one-day route—an 8 km round trip, aiming for a high sand dune with a panoramic view of Swan Lake. I was pretty excited when I first stepped onto the sand, but after walking one kilometer, the smile faded. Climbing uphill, every step slipped halfway back, and my heart rate shot up to 160; going downhill was a blast, sinking into the soft sand felt like stepping on cotton. The guide called this "desert unloading," and after a day, it’s equivalent to walking 20 km on flat ground. Photo 1️⃣ Overlooking Swan Lake from the top of the high sand dune—after a 40-minute climb, I finally reached the summit. Swan Lake lay quietly in the middle of the golden sea of sand, with reeds swaying in the breeze by the shore. Sitting on the sand ridge, sipping water, the wind blew the sand into beautiful ripples. In northern China lies the autonomous region of Ningxia which mostly characterised by sweeping sand dunes that go on for miles! I’ve been twice (January and June). In January, most of the desert and fresh water is completely frozen over which is quite surreal for a desert. 4X4 cars were able to drive over the oasis because it was so solidly frozen. In the summer, it can become quite warm but still comfortable enough to camp overnight. There are camel rides available although we chose to hike. The Great Wall of China and the Yellow River is a place that you can’t miss if you are in the city of Zhongwei. The recommended sightseeing time is half an hour or maximum one hour. This place is an impressive archeological gem, its facade is beautiful and its reconstruction from ruin was a total success. Take a sleeper train to the little-travelled city of Yinchuan in Ningxia and explore China’s main wine region, where you can actually find drinkable wine! (Our goal of the trip). The main wineries are Xige and Silver Heights, which also have accommodation. Ningxia also has ancient ruins to explore (Western Xia Tombs and Helanshan) as well as the Tengger Desert where you can sleep in glamping yurts. In the distant Gansu, the most impressive impression is the slightly deserted Gobi Desert in the northwest. Although, I can't say exactly what the Gobi Desert and the Gobi Desert really look like. Just came to Gansu to start from Lanzhou, and showed me a colorful Gansu, because Gansu's geographical span is large, it is actually richer than I expected. This trip will not go too far into the conventional scenic spot, another kind goes deep into Gansu, but today there is still a chance to have a quick contact with the Tengger Desert.

When taking kids out in summer, everyone wants to have fun but also avoid the heat. You might think you need to go to Yunnan or Western Sichuan to escape the summer heat, but who knew there are so many cool and fun places hidden within a two to three-hour high-speed rail ride? From beaches to forests, from caves to deserts, each place offers a natural cooling effect, and most importantly, the kids have a blast, and you don't suffer. 01 Qinhuangdao | Hebei Question 1: Will Beidaihe be overcrowded in August? ⏰ Avoid weekends and peak hours from 10 AM to 3 PM. The beach is mostly empty after 5 PM. We recommend the free beach west of Tiger Stone Marine Park; it's less crowded with fine sand, and kids can spend an entire afternoon digging. Question 2: Is Shanhaiguan worth climbing? Yes, but don't foolishly hike the entire way. Take your kids through the East Gate and head straight to the First Pass Under Heaven city tower. You can reach the top and see the panoramic view in half an hour. ⏰ After 4 PM, the sun is blocked by the city wall, providing perfect lighting for photos. Question 3: Can we go clam digging with kids? Yes, near Pigeon Nest Park in Beidaihe, the tidal flats are full of small crabs and shells after the tide recedes. ⚠️ Remember to check the tide schedule. The two days around the first and fifteenth of the lunar month are best. 02 Guilin | Guangxi If you're traveling with seniors and children, avoid the crowded West Street in Yangshuo. Stay directly in Xingping Ancient Town; it's less crowded and quiet. 🍜 Wake up in the morning and have a bowl of Guilin rice noodles, then head to the pier for a bamboo raft ride. The scenery for the 20 CNY banknote is right here. The kids will definitely be thrilled. If your kids are energetic, visit Reed Flute Cave in the afternoon. The cave maintains a constant 18 degrees Celsius year-round, making it cool without air conditioning. It's recommended to book a guided tour online in advance to see the "Crystal Palace" and "Snow Mountain Reflection" with a guide. ⚠️ The steps at the cave entrance can be a bit slippery, so hold your child's hand. If you have enough time, Longji Terraces are worth an overnight stay. 🚄 It's about a 1.5-hour chartered car ride from Guilin city. Stay in a guesthouse halfway up the mountain to see the mist over the terraces in the morning and evening. The rice paddies are green in August, making for great photos, but it's not recommended to take very young children to climb the entire section. 03 Baiyin | Gansu Don't be fooled by the name "Baiyin" (meaning "silver"), thinking there are only mines here. The Yellow River Stone Forest is the real treasure. ⏰ Be sure to go in the morning when the light shines obliquely on the stone forest, making the colors golden and warm, so you won't need filters for photos. From the scenic area entrance, take an electric cart to the canyon mouth, then switch to a donkey cart or horseback. My child insisted on riding a donkey cart when we went, giggling all the way. Along the way, you can see the "Yellow River Waterwheel" and "Longwan Ancient Village," which have a strong Northwestern flavor. ⚠️ There's a hiking trail in the canyon, about a 40-minute walk, which is fine for children aged five or six and older. If you're worried about getting tired, you can take a sheepskin raft downstream for a perfect experience. 04 Zhongwei | Ningxia Regarding "camping in the desert or staying in the city," I'll choose for you: with kids, you must stay in the city. The reason is simple. Gaomiao Baoan Temple is in the city center, just a short stroll downstairs. The Arhat Hall and underground palace in the temple are less known, and kids will find it like a maze adventure. ⚠️ The underground palace is quite dark, so young children might be scared. As for Shapotou, it's better for a full day of fun. ⏰ Rush in when it opens at 8 AM. First, enjoy the sheepskin rafts and sand sliding in the Yellow River area. When it gets hot at noon, go camel riding in the desert area. 🍜 Have lunch at a farmhouse restaurant near the scenic area entrance. We recommend hand-grabbed lamb and scrambled eggs with sand onions. 🚄 A high-speed train from Yinchuan to Zhongwei takes only 1 hour, and two days on a weekend are enough to explore thoroughly. 05 Alxa | Inner Mongolia If you only have three days, follow this itinerary. Arrive in Ejina Banner in the evening of the first day and head straight to the Poplar Forest Tourist Area. Although the poplar trees aren't yellow in August, they are vibrantly green, and the light filtering through the leaves creates beautiful photo opportunities. 🍜 In the evening, enjoy roasted lamb ribs with ice-cold beer in town; it's a treat for adults too. Go to Badain Jaran Desert early on the second day. ⚠️ Don't drive yourself; be sure to hire a local guide with an off-road vehicle. The desert has steep slopes and bumpy roads, so children in the back seat must wear seatbelts. You'll stop by a lake (Haizi) where the water is blue, and kids will shriek with excitement seeing a large lake in the desert for the first time. ⏰ After 4 PM, the light softens, which is the best time for sand play and camel riding. Remember to give your children masks and sunglasses, as it can be quite windy and sandy. 06 Changde | Hunan Stepping into the Peach Blossom Spring Scenic Area, before I could even say "wow," the scent of osmanthus flowers wafted through the air. The osmanthus wasn't in full bloom in August, but a few early-blooming trees at the foot of the mountain already carried a sweet fragrance. Passing through the Qin People's Ancient Cave, the moment it opened up, my child immediately exclaimed, "Mom, Tao Yuanming lied! This place is much more beautiful than what the textbook described." The valley is full of green shade and flowing water, and the temperature is at least five or six degrees lower than the city. But if it's foggy, you won't see anything. 👉 Check the real-time weather before you go; don't rush blindly. Huaxia City is a large garden scenic area with an indoor ocean theater and folk museum, suitable for escaping the sun. 🍜 Head straight to Hanlefang for lunch. Korean fried chicken and cold noodles are the kids' favorites. ⚠️ Go to Liugong Island early. There are only two boats to the island each day, at 9 AM and 10:30 AM.
