My first desert hike was on a beginner-friendly one-day route—an 8 km round trip, aiming for a high sand dune with a panoramic view of Swan Lake. I was pretty excited when I first stepped onto the sand, but after walking one kilometer, the smile faded. Climbing uphill, every step slipped halfway back, and my heart rate shot up to 160; going downhill was a blast, sinking into the soft sand felt like stepping on cotton. The guide called this "desert unloading," and after a day, it’s equivalent to walking 20 km on flat ground. Photo 1️⃣ Overlooking Swan Lake from the top of the high sand dune—after a 40-minute climb, I finally reached the summit. Swan Lake lay quietly in the middle of the golden sea of sand, with reeds swaying in the breeze by the shore. Sitting on the sand ridge, sipping water, the wind blew the sand into beautiful ripples. In northern China lies the autonomous region of Ningxia which mostly characterised by sweeping sand dunes that go on for miles! I’ve been twice (January and June). In January, most of the desert and fresh water is completely frozen over which is quite surreal for a desert. 4X4 cars were able to drive over the oasis because it was so solidly frozen. In the summer, it can become quite warm but still comfortable enough to camp overnight. There are camel rides available although we chose to hike. The Great Wall of China and the Yellow River is a place that you can’t miss if you are in the city of Zhongwei. The recommended sightseeing time is half an hour or maximum one hour. This place is an impressive archeological gem, its facade is beautiful and its reconstruction from ruin was a total success. Try not to miss out the sunset as this Great Wall has a great panoramic view to the Yellow river. Plan accordingly to get a good spot to take some photographs. Take a sleeper train to the little-travelled city of Yinchuan in Ningxia and explore China’s main wine region, where you can actually find drinkable wine! (Our goal of the trip). The main wineries are Xige and Silver Heights, which also have accommodation. Ningxia also has ancient ruins to explore (Western Xia Tombs and Helanshan) as well as the Tengger Desert where you can sleep in glamping yurts. In the distant Gansu, the most impressive impression is the slightly deserted Gobi Desert in the northwest. Although, I can't say exactly what the Gobi Desert and the Gobi Desert really look like. Just came to Gansu to start from Lanzhou, and showed me a colorful Gansu, because Gansu's geographical span is large, it is actually richer than I expected. This trip will not go too far into the conventional scenic spot, another kind goes deep into Gansu, but today there is still a chance to have a quick contact with the Tengger Desert.

During summer vacation, popular cities are always crowded, and flight tickets and hotels double in price. But from late August to September, temperatures start to drop and the student crowds disperse. Many places quietly enter their off-season pricing. Today, I’ve picked a few destinations reachable within two to three hours by high-speed train that offer unique experiences—cool mountains and lively night markets. The best part is fewer people, so you can truly enjoy a private experience. 01 Harbin | Heilongjiang Don’t think Harbin is only worth visiting in winter. Come in summer to see a city supported by European architecture and lush greenery. I arrived at Central Street at 3 PM that day. There weren’t many people, and sunlight streamed through the arched windows of the Ma Song’er Hotel, casting long shadows. 📍 The area around Saint Sophia Cathedral is under renovation, but the square remains open. After 5 PM, the light is just right, with pigeons flying around the dome, creating a warm golden glow in photos. 🍜 A local friend took me to “Lao Chu Jia” on Shangyou Street. When the sweet and sour pork arrived, the vinegar aroma hit my nose. The crispy crust and the sweet and sour taste were an instant appetite booster. ⚠️ If you’re coming for the Ice and Snow World, sorry, it’s closed in summer, so don’t go for nothing. But Volga Manor offers a Russian-style experience. It’s about 50 yuan by taxi from Central Street. Inside is a replica of Saint Nicholas Church, quieter than downtown. For lodging, I recommend staying near Toulong Street, a five-minute walk from Sophia Cathedral. It’s convenient to go to the Songhua River in the evening. Off-season standard rooms start just above 300 yuan. 02 Zunyi | Guizhou Many people still associate Zunyi with textbooks, but in summer, it’s a treasure dyed red by the Chishui Danxia landform. It was drizzling when I visited Chishui. 📍 Walking along the scenic boardwalk, the red sandstone on both sides shone wet, and the bamboo forest above rustled in the wind like a natural air conditioner. ⏰ Before 10 AM, the mist hadn’t cleared. Standing on the viewing platform, Foguang Rock looked like a giant red clam emerging from a sea of green. 🍜 After descending, I found a tofu pudding noodle shop in Fuxing Town. The noodles were wide alkaline noodles dipped in chili paste and tofu pudding—smooth and spicy. Crushed peanuts added a fragrant crunch. ⚠️ The scenic area is large. It’s best to take the sightseeing bus round-trip. Walking alone will tire your legs. 🚄 From downtown Zunyi to Chishui, take the high-speed train to Luzhou Station, then transfer to a bus. The total trip takes about two hours. To save time, consider chartering a car for about 300 yuan per vehicle. For lodging, staying in Chishui city offers the best value. It’s a half-hour drive to the scenic area with many accommodation options. 03 Tianshui | Gansu Tianshui surprised me. I expected a dry northwest city, but the foot of Maiji Mountain was as green as Jiangnan. 📍 I climbed the plank road from the bottom of the grottoes. The wooden ladder wobbled a bit. Near the Buddha statue, I could see the folds in the robes clearly. The blue on the painted sculptures still retained its brightness from a thousand years ago. ⏰ After 3 PM is best. The sunlight slants on the Buddha’s side, and the shadows make the features look three-dimensional. 🍜 After descending, I went to “Chang Ji Gua Gua” near Fuxi Temple. Gua Gua is made from buckwheat, similar to cold jelly but firmer. Mixed with chili oil and garlic sauce, it’s sour, spicy, and appetizing. You can eat your fill for about 10 yuan per person. ⚠️ Wushan Water Curtain Cave is quite far, about 1.5 hours by bus from downtown Tianshui. Admission is free but spots are limited and require advance booking. If time is tight, I recommend just visiting Maiji Mountain, which can be done in half a day. In the evening, stroll the ancient city walls of Tianshui, which feel authentic without commercialism. 04 Jinan | Shandong Is Jinan hot in summer? That’s because you haven’t been to the right places. 📍 I stayed at a hotel opposite Spring City Square, just a 10-minute walk to Baotu Spring. ⏰ At 7 AM, Baotu Spring was almost empty. Three spring eyes bubbled, coins at the bottom were clearly visible, and the water’s gurgling sound was very soothing. 🍜 Just around the corner is “Baotu Spring Restaurant.” I bought an oil twist, palm-sized, with layers you can peel apart. The scallion aroma bursts from inside. Eat it hot for a crispy crust. ⚠️ Climbing Qianfoshan is easy, but after 4 PM, the cable car gets crowded. I suggest going in the morning, entering from the south gate and exiting the north gate. On the way down, you can visit Daming Lake. 🚄 A taxi from Jinan West Station to the scenic area costs about 30 yuan. For lodging, I recommend a guesthouse near Furong Street. You can go out late for braised pork. The “Old Soldier Braised Pork” there is fatty but not greasy. Bailixia is so crowded it feels like rush hour on the subway. I went on a weekday and saw fewer than 10 people the whole time. The air smelled purely of leaves. 🚄 From Baoding city to Qingxi Mausoleum, take the high-speed train to Yixian Station, then taxi for half an hour. 🍜 In the city, try donkey meat sandwich at “Lao Cheng Jia.” The sandwich crust is crispy and crumbly, the donkey meat is cold, and with a bowl of millet porridge, three cost only 12 yuan. For lodging, staying near Baoding Station is most convenient. Taxi rides to city attractions are all within 15 minutes. 06 Fuyang | Anhui I know many people don’t know much about Fuyang, but Balihe can keep you entertained all day. 📍 Entering the scenic area, you walk along the waterside boardwalk. White walls and black tiles reflect in the water.
