2026 Normandy Travel Guide: must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transport & travel experiences (updated in July)

Normandy is a place where the rugged beauty of the Atlantic meets the comfort of apple orchards, and history resounds louder than the wind over the cliffs. Just a couple of hours from Paris, endless beaches, cider, Camembert, and landscapes that look like they came straight from an Impressionist painting await you. In February 2026, we came to France for two weeks for the international wine exhibition Vinexpo Paris. Traditionally, when in France, we visit at least one other region. This time, we decided to go to Normandy. There are two convenient ways to get from Paris to Le Havre: by train or by bus, and the choice depends on your budget and time. We traveled from Paris to Le Havre by train, and from Le Havre to Paris by bus. Train (the fastest and most comfortable option) Trains depart from Gare Saint-Lazare. Travel time is approximately 2–2.5 hours. These are direct SNCF trains (TER or Intercités), without transfers. Pros: · Fast and reliable • Comfortable carriages • Convenient arrival directly in the center of Le Havre Cons: · Tickets are more expensive (especially at the last minute) Bus (budget option) Routes are operated by companies like FlixBus and BlaBlaCar Bus. Departures usually come from Bercy Seine Bus Station or other bus terminals. Travel time is approximately 3-3.5 hours. Pros: · Significantly cheaper • Many departures throughout the day Cons: · Longer travel time • Possible delays due to traffic Hotels in Le Havre are significantly cheaper than in Paris. We chose a hotel directly across from the train and bus stations, which are located close to each other. First, we took the bus to Etretat. Buses #21 and #509 run regularly on this route. Travel time: 45–60 minutes. The bus runs regularly (but it's best to check the schedule in advance). Tickets are inexpensive – about €2 per person one-way. Buy both round-trip tickets. In Étretat, we encountered rain and bad weather, but this didn't stop us from exploring the town, drinking delicious coffee, and visiting the famous Étretat gardens. Upon returning to Le Havre, we decided to go further and head to Honfleur, especially since the sun came out in the afternoon. We also took bus #123 from the bus station. Please note that buses have winter and summer schedules, and they don't run as frequently as we'd like. A one-way ticket costs about €3 per person. Honfleur is one of the most atmospheric towns in Normandy: its old port, narrow streets, and the light that has inspired artists. Must-see attractions: Old Port (Vieux Bassin) The heart of the city is the picturesque harbor with its tall, narrow houses reflected in the water. It's an ideal spot for a stroll and photos, especially at sunset. Church of Sainte-Catherine Church of Sainte-Catherine is a unique 15th-century wooden church built by shipbuilders. Its interior resembles an upturned ship's hull. Garden of Personalities (Jardin des Personnalités) The Jardin des Personnalités is a pleasant seaside stroll with busts of famous French figures associated with the region, including artists and writers. Musee Eugène Boudin Musée Eugène Boudin is a small but important museum dedicated to the artist who was born here and who influenced the development of Impressionism. Embankment and walk to the lighthouse Walk to the mouth of the Seine for views of the sea, the port, and the Pont de Normandy. Streets of the Old Town Getting lost is the best plan: antique shops, galleries, cider bars, and seafood restaurants create that perfect "Normandy postcard." In Honfleur, we saw one of the most beautiful sunsets over the harbor, and at dusk, we headed back to Le Havre. The next day, we were scheduled to visit Deauville, but the weather changed again. We decided to save Deauville for our next visit to Normandy and devote this day to the Impressionists at the MuMa museum in Le Havre. MuMa — Musée d'art moderne André Malraux — is one of the main cultural icons of Le Havre. Situated right by the sea, this museum amazes with its glass and steel architecture, filled with natural light that changes throughout the day and seems to continue the dialogue with the paintings inside. This museum houses one of the largest Impressionist collections in France after the Orsay Museum: works by Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro, and other masters inspired by the Normandy coast. MuMa is more than just a museum; it's a place where you can truly experience the connection between art and the sea, light, and wind—the very landscape that makes Normandy so worthwhile. After a stroll through Le Havre, which was significantly damaged during World War II and rebuilt by the architect Auguste Perret, we went to lunch. Incidentally, Perret's Le Havre city center is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site as an outstanding example of post-war urban development. The center boasts numerous bistros and even open-air stalls selling authentic Normandy specialties—mussels, oysters, fish, and, of course, Camembert, the king of cheeses in Normandy and France, everywhere. Route: Paris 🚄 Rennes 🚌 Mont Saint-Michel 🚌 Foot of the mountain. 🚄 Departing from Paris, I took the 6:44 train to Rennes. Unfortunately, it was delayed by nearly an hour, so I couldn’t catch the bus from Rennes to Mont Saint-Michel at around 9:00. 🚌 I bought the ticket on-site, which seemed more expensive than online, costing €31 for a round trip. However, if you book online in advance and encounter delays like mine, it’s uncertain whether you can take the next bus. The bus ticket purchase point is actually located next to an exit on the first floor of the train hall, so you don’t need to go outside. 👉 Online bus ticket purchase: The boarding point is at the bus station outside the train station near the ticket purchase point. My bus departed from platform 2. Outbound: Departed at 10:45 and arrived at the foot of the mountain by 12:00. Return: Departed at 17:00 and arrived at the train station by 18:15. 🚌 After getting off the bus, walk straight for about 50 meters to find a free shuttle bus to the foot of the mountain, with frequent departures. On the day I visited, the tide was very low, and the weather forecast predicted heavy rain and strong winds. I initially considered rescheduling. In reality, the wind was indeed very strong, to the point where people could barely stand, but the rain wasn’t as bad, and the afternoon even saw some sunshine 🌞. After April 25, there will be several days of high tides; you can check the tide schedule on Calameo. It seems many people enjoy walking in the mud, so you can bring water shoes to experience it and explore the distant mudflats. There are two paths for climbing the mountain: the outer path offers views of the sea and some old defensive structures, while the inner path lets you explore the town, shop for souvenirs, and dine. The abbey has a single route; just follow it to complete the tour. Classic sheep viewing spot: Get off at the first stop of the return shuttle bus, where you’ll see a bridge. Cross the street, go past the fence, and keep walking for about half an hour to reach the winding paths and sheep. After taking photos, continue straight, exit the fence, and navigate to the visitor center to return to the bus boarding point. This segment also takes about half an hour.

Went to Monet garden last week. Even without much planning, the trip went smoothly. We took the bus both ways. After visiting, I really fell in love with this little town by the Seine. Sisters who want to go can refer to my method~ · 🚗 Transportation If you take the train yourself, you need to go from Paris Saint-Lazare station to Vernon-Giverny, then transfer to a bus to get to the garden entrance. Checking schedules and transfers is a bit of a hassle, and train tickets are quite competitive during peak season. I didn’t want to bother, so I just booked a half-day tour with pickup and drop-off and an English guide, which was much more convenient! · 🌿 5.5-hour itinerary (relaxed pace) 🕘 9:15 AM / 2:00 PM departure from Paris: I chose the morning departure. In 708 AD, the Bishop of Avranches, inspired by the Archangel Saint Michael, began carving the mountain and building a chapel, starting a thousand-year history of construction on the holy mountain. In 966, Benedictine monks settled here, building the abbey along the mountain. Craftsmen and pilgrims carved stones with the tides, engraving their faith into the rock. At the foot of the mountain, the town of Le Mont-Saint-Michel grew alongside, surviving by the tides. During the Hundred Years' War, it was defended by the natural tidal barriers, where daily life and devotion coexisted. Next time, we must return during high tide to personally experience the world-renowned spectacle of the holy mountain embraced by the sea and the island floating on the ocean. While joining a tour from Paris is the easiest way to visit Mont Saint-Michel, it's also easy to go independently! Travel by train from Paris Montparnasse Station at 16:01, arriving in Pontorson at 18:55 (¥7,545). From Pontorson Station, take a bus around 19:20 towards Mont Saint-Michel (approx. €4.30). On this day, stay at a hotel near the meandering section of the island, rather than on the island itself. I chose this option because hotels on the island were expensive, and I prioritized ease of movement and sunrise photography. The next day, photograph in the meandering area in front of the hotel from early morning. In the morning, leave your luggage at the tourist information center on the opposite shore and take a free bus to Mont Saint-Michel island. Visit the abbey around 9:30, return to the opposite shore around 11:00, and take the direct bus to Rennes departing at 11:35 (arriving at 12:50, €15). I took a connecting train from Rennes at 13:30, arriving in Paris Montparnasse at 15:00 (¥4,588). The total cost for travel and accommodation was approximately ¥30,000. A few years ago, I spent my vacation in this coastal region, and during the trip, I visited Claude Monet's home with his studio and garden in Giverny. Given my general interest in art, this exhibition was a must-see for me. Regarding the exhibits, I was not disappointed. The Städel Museum in Frankfurt showcases numerous paintings by Monet, as well as works by other artists from the Impressionist era, all focusing on selected motifs from the Normandy coast near Étretat. The content is a definite highlight, complemented by an app with an audio guide (usable only on-site) and an extensive online digitorial that allows visitors to prepare for and follow up on the exhibition from home. My only minor criticism is that the exhibition layout spans multiple small rooms across two floors. Despite the chronological numbering, it feels somewhat like navigating a labyrinth, which is a general issue with the Städel. The photos accompanying this review feature selected works from the exhibition alongside similar motifs I photographed in Normandy. The special exhibition "The Discovery of Étretat" is fantastic and beautifully complements the extensive permanent collection. Excellent lighting and spacious layouts ensure that even larger crowds can comfortably access the exhibits. Visitors are greeted by "the old Goethe" and a lifelike sculpture of a young artist. Winding paths then lead into Normandy. The selection of top exhibits from international origins is likely unparalleled and offers pure museum enjoyment.

Firstly, the low-cost airline Volotea flies there from various parts of Europe, and secondly, it’s one of the closest international airports to Mont Saint-Michel. 🚩From Nantes to Avranches, you can travel via Flixbus or Blablacar (the scheduled bus, not carpooling). Flixbus is cheaper. Board at Nantes Haluchère stop. Travel time to Avranches is 2 hours 30 minutes. Tickets can be purchased from the driver or on the Flixbus website. 🚩From Avranches to Pontorson, take a train. Tickets can be bought directly at the station. To select the direction and ticket type on the machine, you need to turn the round knob—there are no buttons💁♀️ You’ll figure it out, we believe in you.
