Often compared - somewhat flatteringly - to Venice (a prominent local architect studied there and brought the style home with him) Shkoder has some of La Serenissima’s air of elegiac decay, but tempered by a lively cafe culture in tree-lined, sun-dappled streets twinkling with the chiming of caged goldfinches. Well-fed stray dogs set the tone, sprawling relaxed, almost carpet-like on bar terraces; dapper elderly gents potter by on their bicycles: it’s easy enough to join them - you can hire a bike for €5 and ride along the riverside to Rozafa castle. While having Illyrian roots, much of the visible, well-preserved walls and cisterns of the castle are of 15th century Venetian design and rewards visitors with some satisfying rambling of its walls and outstanding views across the town and surrounding countryside. Entrance fee 400Lek/4 euros, plus an additional 2€ fee if you want to visit the museum. Shala River It has a length of 37 km from the source at the top of Radohina to Dri, it springs at the source of Shtraza at the top of the village Theth, at the foot of the top of Radohina, from where it descends down through the valley of Shala, from Thethi, Ndërlysa and Musha , from Breg-Lumi to Porta e Shalës (Gorge of Rrshqëm), through Lotaj and in the valley of Shoshi, while its discharge goes to Lesniqe in Dri (today Lake Koman). It is a mountain river with an average drop of 22 meters in one kilometer. Shala River is distinguished by its crystalline water, with an average annual flow of about 34 m³ / sec. The maximum inflows reach in November with 52m3 / sec, while the minimum inflows in August in which it reaches 9m³ / sec. The Shala River is rich in a variety of fish, but the most widespread is trout, which grows only in freshwater. The cool blue color of the water is characteristic of this river, the steep cliffs that surround it, seem to touch the sky by hand. There is currently no ‘bus-station’ as such in Shkodër. Instead, buses out of town depart from the central roundabout by The Red Bricks Hotel / Hotel Rozafa. I had been wondering why our hotel manager had advised us to head there early. I initially assumed that buses only left in the morning and therefore we would be stranded if we left later than that, but at breakfast he added ‘I would run over there right now, because the traffic will be bad’. It was a fair warning: I’m writing this passage on the minibus as it waits at the border (see photo) and the queue, while not overlong, is only inching forward. Our bus driver says this is because the border guards work ‘slowly-slowly’. Apparently visa-free border crossing between Albania and Montenegro was only introduced in 2007 - after the narrow pot-holed road that served the border during communism was upgraded with the advent of democracy. Only the road’s speed has improved, however. The glacial checking of passports remains unchanged. Having now arrived at Ulcinj I think the impression that will stay with me from this journey was that it felt like how I imagine travelling must have been during the 1990s and early 2000s: relying upon locals rather than the internet for information and advice, and - the ice thus broken - getting an inkling of the flow and change of local history and opinions from our conversations with the driver. We were the only group in the minibus, and we felt carefully looked after from start to finish- upon arrival at Ulcinj bus station our driver and his employer gave us instructions on how to make the (quite long) walk from the bus station to the historic centre, and bade us what felt like a genuinely affectionate farewell. Key tips: · Yes, head to the road outside Hotel Rozafa early. You will need time to ask the bus drivers there exactly which spot the Ulcinj bus departs from. (For English speakers, the pronunciation is - approximately - ‘Ool-chin-yeh’). · The local bus drivers are really friendly, even if you aren’t planning to use their company or route. It’s worth noting, though, that one of the taxi drivers touting for fares told us ‘no bus for Ulcinj. I’ll take you there - €20 each, same as bus’. Now, it’s perfectly possible that some of these details are befuddled in translation, but there definitely IS a (mini)bus, and the fare is €7 each. Many people stay in Skadar, Albania, as a stopover before hiking the famous Cursed Mountain from Valbona or Tes. (Many hotels and hostels offer luggage storage for an additional fee.) I was one of those people! Since I was there, I wanted to enjoy Skadar's natural beauty, so I rented a bike from the hostel and cycled to Lake Skadar. 🚴 Lake Skadar is a lake that straddles both Albania and Montenegro.
