It is also an excellent vacation destination where Tunisians can enjoy privacy away from foreign tourists. The most iconic building in Tabarka is the Genoese Fortress. The ancient fortress was formed in the 16th century on what was once an independent island. Various groups, including the Genoese, Turks, and Spaniards, fought over it, and finally, in the late 19th century, the French connected it to the mainland. The Genoese Fortress is strategically located, guarding the area. Climbing to the top of the fortress offers a panoramic view; Italy is really not far away, and you can see the entire city of Tabarka. Opposite the fortress is Needle Rock, a uniquely shaped formation where many people come to relax and enjoy the view at sunset. The beach west of the Tabarka Fortress is outstanding, gathering many resort hotels. The most famous is La Cigale Hotel, known for its thalassotherapy and golf.
