If Arles in southern France is Van Gogh's Arles, then Aix-en-Provence is Cézanne's Aix. Aix was the capital of Provence in the Middle Ages. In 123 BC, the Roman consul Sextius Calvinus named the spring here after himself and established Aquae Sextiae. After that, it was occupied by the Visigoths and plundered by the Franks and Lombards. After the 12th century, under the rule of Barcelona/Aragon and Anjou, Aix became an art center and academic center. In 1487, Aix, along with other parts of Provence, became part of the French royal family. Cézanne, the master of "art is a revelation of subtle sensitivity," is so closely associated with Aix that you can follow in Cézanne's footsteps in Aix, from his birthplace to his studio, to the homes of his family and friends, to the cafes he frequented with his friends, and finally to his final resting place, to fully appreciate the city Cézanne experienced.
