Aso Shrine — A Sacred Site with 2,500 Years of History

Located at the heart of Aso Volcano worship, this sanctuary radiates the brilliance of restoration. 📝 What to Expect • Situated at the northern foot of Mount Aso in central Kyushu, Aso Shrine is the head shrine of approximately 500 shrines nationwide and boasts a prestigious history as the primary shrine of Higo Province. The shrine enshrines 12 deities, including Takeiwatatsu-no-Mikoto, and is renowned for its blessings in areas such as agriculture, fire prevention, water safety, traffic safety, good relationships, and fortune. • The six shrine buildings, constructed between 1835 (Tenpō 6) and 1850 (Kaei 3) with contributions from the Kumamoto Domain, are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. Among them, the tower gate, standing at 18 meters tall, is one of Japan's three great tower gates. • Although the tower gate and worship hall were destroyed in the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake, all restoration work was completed by 2023.
