In Miyaji, Aso, almost every walking route eventually leads to Aso Shrine. As the spiritual center of the Aso region, the shrine's history dates back over two thousand years. It enshrines the Twelve Gods of Aso and is deeply intertwined with the local volcano, agriculture, and daily life. Stepping into the spacious shrine grounds, the first thing that catches your eye is the serene wooden architecture. The Kumamoto Earthquake in 2016 caused significant damage, but restoration efforts have gradually been completed. The blend of old and new timber now tells a story of time's passage. Standing before the worship hall, you can feel the presence of Mount Aso in the distance and observe the quiet figures of people praying nearby. Faith flows naturally through everyday life here. I love making Aso Shrine either the starting or ending point of my walks in Miyaji. Without rushing to take photos, I simply sit and watch the wind pass through the shrine's eaves.
