🌋 An active volcano featuring one of the world's largest calderas, located in the heart of Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan - () 🌋 Mount Aso isn't just a single mountain; the name actually refers to the massive caldera and the "Five Peaks of Aso" (Aso Gogaku)—Mount Nakadake, Mount Takadake, Mount Nekodake, Mount Eboshidake, and Mount Kishimadake. 🌋 The colossal caldera we see today was formed by massive land collapses following four major eruptions between 270,000 and 90,000 years ago. The central cone, Nakadake (中岳), remains highly active, periodically spewing smoke. Mountain access is sometimes restricted based on the volcanic alert level, but luckily, I was able to see everything up close on the day of my visit. 🌋 We got a firsthand look at the highly active Nakadake Crater 1 (中岳火口). We were also fortunate enough to see the crater's mysterious, emerald-green sulfur lake. Access here is strictly regulated based on volcanic gas emissions, so make sure to check the real-time conditions before you go. 🌋 Kusasenrigahama (草千里ヶ浜) is a vast, 780,000-square-meter prairie stretching across the northern foothills of Mount Eboshidake. With its large ponds and free-roaming 🐎 horses, it looks like a scene straight out of a painting. You can try horseback riding or enjoy a relaxing trek across the grasslands. 🌋 In ancient times, volcanic eruptions were believed to be the power or wrath of the gods. Built to appease them, ' ' has a history spanning over 2,000 years. This Aso Shrine serves as the head shrine for around 450 Aso Shrines across Japan.
