Baoding: A City of History Beneath Quiet Walls

Baoding, located in Hebei Province not far from Beijing, is a city rich in quiet strength and deep history. Though often overlooked, Baoding carries the charm of ancient traditions, scholarly legacy, and northern simplicity. I began my day at the ancient Baoding Zhili Governor’s Office, once the political heart of northern China during the Qing Dynasty. Walking through its red gates and stone courtyards, I felt the weight of history where governors once ruled and scholars once debated. Next, I visited the Lotus Pond (Lianchi Park), the peaceful “green lung” of the city. The calm water, blooming lotuses, and willow trees made it the perfect place to slow down and enjoy the moment. Elderly locals played chess under the trees, while children fed fish by the lake. For lunch, I tried Baoding’s famous donkey burger (驴肉火烧). Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, it’s a true local delicacy that surprised me with how tasty it was. In the afternoon, I explored the ancient city wall ruins and the Daci Pavilion. Baoding doesn’t try to impress with grandeur—but its calm, authentic atmosphere leaves a lasting impression. Baoding is a city that whispers rather than shouts.
