Baoding Great Wall has always been an important part of the southern Yan Great Wall. For most people, the history of the Baoding Great Wall is a relatively niche topic. ✅History and Remains of the Baoding Great Wall The Great Wall history and culture of Baoding are rich and diverse, covering multiple historical periods including the Warring States Zhongshan Great Wall, the Warring States Southern Yan Great Wall, and the Ming Inner Great Wall. 1️⃣ Warring States Zhongshan Great Wall The State of Zhongshan was a small vassal state during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, located between the Yan and Zhao states. To protect itself, Zhongshan began building the Great Wall in 369 BC, mainly distributed across Laiyuan, Tang County, Shunping, and Quyang counties in Baoding. The Zhongshan Great Wall is a typical early vassal state wall, built according to the terrain and using local materials with a simple form. The wall was mainly constructed with rough stone or a mix of earth and stone. Some key points had beacon towers for observation and alarm. 2️⃣ Warring States Southern Yan Great Wall The Yan state was a vassal state established in the early Western Zhou period, bordering Zhao, Zhongshan, and Qi states to the south. To strengthen its defense, it built two walls: the Southern Yan and Northern Yan Great Walls. Mainly located in Yixian and Xushui District, about 65 kilometers of wall and ruins remain, roughly following the southern Yishui River, also called the "Yishui Great Wall." It was mainly built with rammed earth, with some sections mixed with earth and stone. Many parts used ancient dikes as the wall foundation, serving both water defense and military defense functions. 3️⃣ Ming Inner Great Wall During the Ming Dynasty, the Inner Great Wall was built to strengthen the capital's defense. The Ming Great Wall within Baoding is part of this Inner Great Wall, under the jurisdiction of Zhenbao Town (also called Baoding Town), serving as the first line of defense southwest of the capital. It mainly spans five counties: Laiyuan, Fuping, Laishui, Yixian, and Tang County. Built primarily with stacked stones and bricks, it winds along the Taihang Mountains for 153 kilometers. Currently, there are 19 surviving passes, 309 enemy platforms, and 100 beacon towers. Among them, Zijin Pass in Yixian and Daoma Pass in Tang County are important gates of the "Inner Three Passes." The sections of the wall in Wulonggou and Baishikou in Laiyuan preserve the original appearance best. ✅Historical Culture of the Baoding Great Wall 1️⃣ Military Defense Culture The Baoding Great Wall is an outstanding example of ancient military defense engineering, built mainly to resist foreign invasions and protect the country and its people. 2️⃣ Ethnic Integration Culture The areas along the Baoding Great Wall are home to multiple ethnic groups. Through long-term interaction and integration, these groups have jointly created a rich and colorful culture. The earliest builders of the Great Wall, the Zhongshan state, was established by the Xianyu tribe of the northern nomadic Baidi people. 3️⃣ Red Revolutionary Culture The Baoding Great Wall area is the birthplace of the first enemy rear anti-Japanese base led by the Communist Party of China‼️ (the very first, a landmark of the Anti-Japanese War). Famous battles such as the Huangtuling killing of Abe Norihide and the Yilai battle defending the Jin-Cha-Ji base all took place along the Baoding Great Wall.
