Gaudí’s first house - Casa Vicens

In 1883 young architect Antoni Gaudí took on a project to design a summer garden house for a wealthy stock exchange broker, Manel Vicens. Two years later, in 1885 Gaudí would finish the construction of Casa Vicens - even though expansion of the gardens and perimeter wall would happen years later. This monument is considered to be of orientalist style, taking on elements Neo-Mudéjar architecture - the Arabic style in the Iberian peninsula - and evokes Gaudí’s main inspiration, nature. Casa Vicens is located in the Gràcia neighborhood, nowadays a booming area in downtown Barcelona with plenty of cafes and designer stores, but back when it was built it was a village in its own, separate from the city, hence its conception as a summer villa, where the Vicens family would enjoy cooler summer night alway from the polluted streets of industrious Barcelona.
