Zhongshan Park, the first public garden within the capital city

"Zhongshan Park" is located to the west of Tiananmen in Beijing and is a commemorative classical altar-temple garden. Originally the Xingguo Temple during the Liao and Jin dynasties, it was renamed Wanshou Xingguo Temple in the Yuan dynasty. In the nineteenth year of the Yongle reign of the Ming dynasty (1421), when Emperor Zhu Di built the Beijing palace, he restructured it into the Altar of Land and Grain according to the 'left ancestor right community' system. This place became where the emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties worshipped the gods of land and grain. In 1914, it was turned into the Central Park, and in 1925, the coffin of Mr. Sun Yat-sen was placed in the worship hall for people from all walks of life to pay their respects. In 1928, it was renamed Zhongshan Park.
