Covering an area of 230,000 square meters, it is a commemorative classical temple garden. It was originally the Altar of Land and Grain during the Ming and Qing dynasties, built according to the ritual system of 'left ancestral temple, right altar' from the Zhou dynasty, along with the Imperial Ancestral Temple (now the Working People's Cultural Palace). In 1925, after the death of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, his coffin was placed in the worship hall (now Zhongshan Hall) in the park for a public memorial service.
