In the 18th year of Yongle in the Ming Dynasty (1420), according to the "Rites of Zhou" principle of "left ancestral temple, right altar," it was built as the Altar of Earth and Grain. The Altar of Earth and Grain was a place where the emperor worshipped the gods of earth and grain, symbolizing imperial power, land, and national harvest. In the third year of the Republic of China (1914), under the creativity and supervision of Zhu Qiqian, the Minister of the Interior of the Beiyang Government, the Altar of Earth and Grain was converted into a park and opened to the public, initially named Central Park. It was the first public garden within Beijing city at that time. In the 14th year of the Republic of China (1925), after the death of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, his coffin was placed in the worship hall (now Zhongshan Hall) in the park for a public memorial service.
