The Summer Palace, formerly known as Qingyi Garden, is a royal garden of the Qing Dynasty in China. It is located in Haidian District, Beijing, about 15 kilometers away from the city. The whole garden covers an area of 290 hectares, of which about three quarters are water, and it is adjacent to the Old Summer Palace. The Summer Palace is based on Kunming Lake and Wanshou Mountain, and is built with the design techniques of Jiangnan Garden. It is based on West Lake in Hangzhou. It is the most complete royal palace garden in China and is known as the "Royal Garden Museum". The history of the Summer Palace can be traced back to the Qianlong Emperor of the Qing Dynasty. In the fifteenth year of Qianlong (1750), Emperor Qianlong used 4.48 million taels of silver to rebuild it as Qingyi Garden in order to respect his mother, Chongqing Empress Dowager. In the tenth year of Xianfeng (1860), Qingyi Garden was burned by the British and French forces. It was rebuilt in the fourteenth year of Guangxu (1888) and renamed the Summer Palace. In the twenty-sixth year of Guangxu (1900), the Summer Palace was destroyed by the "Eight-Power Allied Forces" and the treasures were looted. After the fall of the Qing Dynasty, the Summer Palace was destroyed during the warlord melee and the Kuomintang rule. In 1961, the Summer Palace was announced by the State Council of the People's Republic of China as the first batch of national key cultural relics protection units. In November 1998, the Summer Palace was included in the "World Heritage List". On May 8, 2007, the Summer Palace was officially approved by the National Tourism Administration as a national 5A tourist attraction. In 2009, the Summer Palace was selected as the largest existing royal garden in China by the China World Records Association. The Summer Palace is not only an important part of China's historical and cultural heritage, but also a world cultural heritage, attracting countless domestic and foreign tourists to visit.
