Wushiyangxiang Archway

Wushiyangxiang Archway is located in Dengjingping, Nanlu Village, Shuiwen Town, Cenxi City, Wuzhou City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. It was built by Emperor Tongzhi of the Qing Dynasty to honor Liu Yunchang, a centenarian from Nanlu Village, Shuiwen, Cenxi, who lived with five generations of his family. It is also the only existing archway in Guangxi that was granted by the emperor to honor a centenarian living with five generations of his family. The archway is made of bricks, with double eaves and four pillars. It is 11 meters high, 10 meters wide, and 1.1 meters thick. The top of the archway is decorated with upturned eaves, and the body of the archway is decorated with various figures, flowers, birds, and animals. On both sides of the archway, there are a pair of five-clawed green dragons made of porcelain pieces, which are majestic and unique. Inside the archway, there are three inscriptions: "Wushiyangxiang" by Liu Tingying, the prefect of Wuzhou, "Qingxiqiyi" by Huang Ligang, a fifth-grade scholar, and "Xichaorenshui" by Li Rong, the county magistrate of Cenxi. In the third year of Tongzhi (1864), Liu Yunchang, an eighth-grade official living in Nanlu Village, Cenxi, was blessed with two joys: he was 100 years old and lived with five generations of his family. Huang Ligang and other local gentry wrote a letter to Li Rong, the magistrate of Cenxi, asking him to report to the imperial court for the construction of an archway. The county magistrate's letter was forwarded to the Ministry of Rites in the capital through the Wuzhou Prefecture and the Guangxi Provincial Government. In the fourth year of Tongzhi (1865), Emperor Tongzhi issued an edict approving the construction of the archway and instructed the Guangxi Provincial Government to make a plaque with the words "Wushiyangxiang" to celebrate. In the tenth year of Tongzhi (1871), the archway was completed, and it has a history of more than 150 years. In August 2000, the People's Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region announced it as a cultural relic protection unit at the autonomous region level.
