North Africa Morocco Tunisia Tour (8) One of the Three Blue Cities in the World - Chefchaouen Chefchaouen December 14, 2024 Cloudy, 5-13°C. After lunch, we drove for an hour and a half to the sixth stop, Chefchaouen (Figure 1), the most popular city for photographers in eastern Morocco. Chefchaouen is located in the Rif Mountains of Morocco, at an altitude of about 560 meters, so it is also known as the "Sky City" (Figure 2). The history of Chefchaouen dates back to 1471, when it was a fortress, and the city retains many ancient buildings and cultural heritage. It is close to the Mediterranean Sea and is separated from Spain by the Strait of Gibraltar, and its customs, language, etc. are deeply influenced by Spain. Chefchaouen is also known as the "Blue Diamond" and is famous for its rich Arabic style and beautiful blue buildings. There are many winding alleys and bumpy paths in the old town. Most of the doors, steps, and walls of the houses are painted blue and white, forming a unique landscape, like a fairy tale world. It always gives people the illusion of being on a small Mediterranean island, a beautiful and romantic mountain city (Figures 3-9).
