If you're afraid of altitude sickness and can't go to Tibet, you can visit the Little Potala Palace in Chengde.

In the 36th year of Emperor Qianlong's reign, the leaders of various ethnic minorities in the border areas gathered in Chengde to celebrate the 60th birthday of Emperor Qianlong and the 80th birthday of the Empress Dowager. This was an unprecedented event of national unity among all ethnic groups. In order to respect the beliefs of all ethnic groups and unite the people, Emperor Qianlong ordered the construction of this large temple, the Putuo Zongcheng Temple, which was built in imitation of the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. "Putuo Zongcheng" is the Chinese translation of the Tibetan "Potala". The temple is built on a mountain, facing south. Inside the mountain gate is a stele pavilion, and to the north is the Five Pagoda Gate, which is more than 10 meters high and has three arches. On top of the gate are five Lama pagodas in red, yellow, black, white, and green. To the north of the gate is a glazed archway. The terrain gradually rises to the north of the archway, and various white platforms and pagoda platforms are scattered due to the terrain, with different heights and various changes. Finally, there is the majestic main building, the Dahongtai. On the front of the Dahongtai, there is a large white platform that is 18 meters high, on top of which stands the Dahongtai, which is 25 meters high. Inside the red platform, there are three-story group buildings on all sides, and in the center is the "All Laws Return to One" hall with a double-eave spire and gilded copper tiles. The biggest feature of this temple is its Tibetan-style architecture. There are about 60 large and small buildings in the temple, most of which are flat-roofed white walls. The main building, the Dahongtai, is a dark red square building, which is very eye-catching against the surrounding white buildings. The top of the "All Laws Return to One" hall in the center of the Dahongtai is covered with gilded copper tiles. The cost of this alone is 10,000 taels of gold. This is where major religious ceremonies are held or where the Qing emperors met with important tribal leaders and princes and ministers of ethnic minorities. The Putuo Zongcheng Temple is surrounded by towering ancient trees and has a quiet environment. You can also overlook the Bangchui Mountain from here. It is a must-visit place in the Eight Outer Temples. Tips: 1. Take the sightseeing bus of the Mountain Resort and get off at Erma Road. This is the best place to take a panoramic view of the Little Potala Palace. 2. The sightseeing bus departs at 7 a.m., which is the best time to take a panoramic view.
