Even though it looks uphill, it is actually downhill, a phenomenon also known as a gravity hill or magnetic hill. However, I found it unconvincing. The larger mystery was what the signs meant before I went home and translated them. The road is named Dokkaebi Road, named after the mythical creatures from Korean folk lore. They are also known as Korean goblins and you may have heard the term if you like kdramas. It was a popular 2016-2017 drama.
