Huayan Temple and Huayan Pagoda

The Datong Huayan Temple is divided into two parts: the upper and lower temples. The lower temple has a pagoda at the back, known as the Huayan Pagoda. Standing on the platform of the Mahavira Hall in the upper temple, you can see this towering pagoda, with countless swallows flying and hovering above it. The Huayan Pagoda is the second largest square wooden pagoda in China, second only to the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, and is also a landmark building in the ancient city of Datong. The base of the pagoda is made of 100 tons of pure copper, and it houses more than 1,000 large and small Buddha statues, known as the Thousand Buddha Underground Palace. What's more, this pagoda allows visitors to climb to the top. Put on shoe covers, climb the narrow and steep stairs to the top of the pagoda, and overlook the ancient city of Datong. The view is indeed unlimited.
