Museum of the Origins of the Polish State in Gniezno

The creation of the museum in Gniezno is related to the archaeological research conducted here since 1948, the aim of which was to learn about the history and obtain monuments documenting the beginnings of the Polish state and its first capital. The results of the discoveries became an impulse to establish in 1956 the Gniezno Branch of the Archaeological Museum in Poznań, with its seat at ul. st. Jana 9, where mainly artifacts from excavations were presented. In 1966, the idea of building a monument to Mieszko I and Bolesław Chrobry, the first historical rulers of Poland, was born. This monument has become a complex of buildings currently housing: a museum, an auditorium and a high school. Realization began in 1973 according to a design made at the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Poznań. The construction of the monument was an opportunity to create an independent museum in Gniezno. The Museum of the Origins of the Polish State in Gniezno was established as an institution in 1973. From the mid-1970s, preparations were also underway for the main permanent exhibition, which was to be a summary of the then state of research on the formation of Polish statehood. #poland #museum
