Guangzhou Temple of the Five Immortals: The Legend of the Five Rams and the Ancient Temple 🏯 The Temple of the Five Immortals is an ancient temple that bears witness to the origin of Guangzhou's nicknames "Yangcheng," "Wuyangcheng," and "Suicheng." 🐏 The legend of the "Five Rams Bearing Rice Ears, Gathering in the Chu Court" tells the story of five immortals riding five rams with rice ears in their mouths and descending to Guangzhou. This legend not only reflects the history of the ancestors of Guangzhou bringing livestock and good crops to develop Lingnan, but also endows Guangzhou with a unique cultural significance. 🏛️ In 1377, during the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty, the Temple of the Five Immortals was officially built as a temple to worship the five immortals. It carries the wish for a good harvest and a better life. 🐫 According to legend, during the reign of King Yi of Zhou, five immortals descended to Guangzhou and gave rice ears to the locals, wishing Guangzhou to never suffer from famine. When the immortals ascended to the sky, the rams turned into stones, and Guangzhou was named "Wuyangcheng," "Suicheng," "Yangcheng," and "Yangshi" (Ram Stone).
