The Palace Museum's collection is coming to town with a stunning exhibition of Cantonese clocks.

Through exquisite cultural relics, historical archives, various Cantonese handicrafts, and rich multimedia digital exhibits, the exhibition comprehensively showcases the diverse aspects and contemporary value of Cantonese clocks from the Qing Dynasty from three dimensions: "craftsmanship," "Chinese manufacturing," and "civilization exchange and mutual learning." Since the end of the Ming Dynasty, when European missionaries brought self-ringing clocks to China, these novel Western curiosities have opened a new chapter in cultural exchange between China and the West. By the Qing Dynasty, clocks and watches had not only become treasures of the imperial court but also coveted treasures of high-ranking officials and nobles. As an important center for the manufacture of mechanical clocks and watches, Guangzhou gradually developed a unique Cantonese clock craft with its unique geographical advantages and the prosperity of Sino-Western trade. Cantonese clocks are famous for their colorful enamel decorations, complex and exquisite mechanical structures, and strong national characteristics. Clocks and watches designed in auspicious shapes such as pavilions, towers, and gourd vases are not only recorders of time but also witnesses to the integration of art and culture.
