Aberdeen: Everyday Promenade, C'mon, Just Take A Walk

#hongkongtrip The floating village of Aberdeen, located in the harbor of the same name in the southwestern part of Hong Kong Island, has a long history and is home to hundreds of people living on fishing boats. Their traditional way of life and identity stand in stark contrast to the modern metropolis. Aberdeen Harbour was the first place in Hong Kong where British troops landed in 1841 during the First Opium War. In the 19th century, the bay became one of the most important fishing ports in the region. Gradually, a village with fishermen and their families living on boats was formed here. They were mainly representatives of the Tanka people who settled in the territories of modern Hong Kong in the period from VII to IX centuries. The fishing industry developed rapidly, which led to an increase in the village's population. The promenade is about 800 meters long and is adjacent to the wholesale fish market in the west and tennis courts in the east. This is a great place to walk along the shore and observe everything that is happening around. The ideal time to visit the embankment is considered to be early morning, when the streets are not yet crowded with people and transport. The floating village will delight photography enthusiasts with its unique landscapes, in which old-fashioned junks are adjacent to ultramodern yachts moored nearby and high-rise buildings framing the harbor. This is a great example of a real oriental flavor, where modernity and tradition can harmoniously exist next to each other. It will not take long to drive to the floating village from the central areas of Hong Kong. The Wong Chuk Hang Station Subway Station (exit B) of the South Island line is 1 kilometer from the Aberdeen Waterfront. There are stops with ground public transport at the eastern and western ends of the boardwalk.

Aberdeen Promenade

Tree-lined Aberdeen Promenade runs from west to east on Aberdeen Praya Rd across the water from Ap Lei Chau. On its western end is sprawling Aberdeen Wholesale Fish Market with its industrial-strength water tanks teeming with marine life. It's pungent and grimy, but 100% Hong Kong. Before reaching the market, you'll pass berthed house boats and seafood-processing vessels. (We detected a karaoke parlour or two as well.) The eastern end of Aberdeen Promenade is where you get on a boat for Ap Lei Chau. The best way to explore the harbour is by sampan. A half-hour tour of the typhoon shelter costs HK$60 to HK$80 per person. Ferries depart multiple times a day for Lamma Island and Cheung Chau from here, and about twice a week for Po Toi Island.
