Nagoya Travel Guide - Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens

Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens is a vast attraction, ranking second in daily visitors only to Tokyo's Ueno Zoo. Two-thirds of the area is dedicated to the zoo, while the remaining third is a botanical garden. The zoo features fascinating animals such as raccoons, Asian elephants, and sloths, though unfortunately, it does not have the national treasure, the giant panda. Inside the park, there's an observation deck (tickets must be purchased at the zoo entrance, but I skipped it due to a 30-minute queue during Golden Week). Additionally, there's a small electric train for touring around and a mini amusement park 🎠 (which requires a separate ticket and is more suitable for children, so I didn't try it as it seemed too childish). Lastly, there's a traditional building resembling those in Shirakawa-go, which is a nice alternative if you can't visit Shirakawa-go itself.
