Phnom Kampong Trach Cave

#thingstodo This area is another example of adventure hidden in plain sight in an area many tourists wrongly dismiss as "boring Kampot and Kep." In this case, the cave openings, and there are many, dotting the higher elevation areas of the mountains are literally right in front of your face from the road. The motorbike ride to this area from Kampot was also beautiful during the time of year that I traveled - very vibrantly green. Great market place and authentic Khmer style. I really love this kind of places where almost now tourists come. I spent over five hours in the area exploring more than five caves, I went caving with locals, had a ton of fun jumping off rocks and swimming in a water cave, and scaled to the top of the mountain - at one point using thick tree roots as rope to pull myself up the mountain. The show cave itself is unimpressive and may only hold your attention for a few minutes. The rest of the area is another example of incredible adventure lurking in plain sight in Kampot/Kep at a price of a few dollars where for the same experience you'd likely pay hundreds of dollars in other countries. Helmet, headlamp, backupflashlight, and water came in handy.
