Sanjusangendo

Officially known as Rengeo-in. It was originally built by Taira no Kiyomori in 1164, during the reign of Emperor Go-Shirakawa, as part of the Hosho-ji Temple complex. Although it was destroyed by fire, the current main hall was rebuilt in 1266. The main hall, which has 33 spaces between its columns, is approximately 125 meters long from north to south and 22 meters wide from east to west. In the center of the hall is a seated statue of the Thousand-Armed Kannon crafted by the Kamakura period sculptor Tankei, flanked by 1,000 life-sized standing statues of the Thousand-Armed Kannon. All the statues inside the hall, including the statues of the Wind God and Thunder God, are designated as National Treasures. Access Get off at the "Hakubutsukan Sanjusangendo-mae" stop on the city bus.
