Located on the slopes of Mount Ogura in western Kyoto, Jōjakkō-ji Temple was originally the private residence of Fujiwara no Teika, a nobleman and author of the Hyakunin Isshu poetry anthology during the Heian period (794–1192). It was converted into a temple in the late 16th century. During the red leaf season, Jōjakkō-ji Temple is a sea of red. Enter the mountain gate and step into this ancient temple, gently caressed by time, and you will be greeted by layers of red leaves. The ancient thatched roof of the Niōmon Gate and the fiery red maple leaves reflect each other, dyeing the entire temple red. The ginkgo trees are yellow, the pines and cypresses are lush, and the maple leaves are bright red. Here, you can see the colorful "natural autumn screen," the "frosty leaves redder than February flowers," and the artistic conception of "red maple leaves on the edge of the blue clouds." Looking down at Kyoto through the three-story pagoda, it seems as if the whole world is dyed in rich colors.
