Longyearbyen appeared in the Icelandic Chronicle in 1194 and was accidentally discovered and recorded on a map during a polar expedition more than 400 years ago. Initially, people came to hunt whales, seals, polar bears, and explore new territories. But soon, the abundance of coal mines attracted developed countries to settle here. There are eight coal mines of various sizes, many of which have been converted into hostels due to the world wars, but one mine owned by Germany is still in operation and is said to have more than 35 years of mining left. 👱🏻‍♀️🧑‍🦰People from 51 countries work here because of the Svalbard Treaty, which allows people to work here without a visa. Birth and death are prohibited here, and the seriously ill and pregnant women are transported to the mainland for treatment, but this extremely northern place has well-equipped infrastructure. - Police station (usually uneventful because there is no crime) - Hospital (only six doctors and eight beds, if you get seriously ill, you have to take a small plane to Tromsø) - Fire department, government, museum, restaurant, large coop supermarket (prices are the same as in mainland Norway), shopping mall, northernmost post office, bar, café... everything you can think of! - University and library (750 students study here, with a collection of over 30,000 books) - Church (small and delicate but open all year round, faith falls here) 🌳- Global Seed Vault (built deep underground in the Svalbard Islands, maintained at -18°C all year round, is the last line of defense to ensure global food security. The seed vault can store 2.25 billion seeds and is designed to protect crop diversity and respond to disasters such as asteroid impacts on Earth, nuclear war, and alien invasions (bushi, more than 200 countries have contributed seeds, making it a veritable Noah's Ark of human civilization. In this city of 2,500 permanent residents, there are more than 3,000 polar bears. The famous polar bear warning sign is followed by an active polar bear area, which is forbidden to enter without permission. In January this year, 15 polar bears were sighted on the edge of the city, sometimes they just move slowly or watch humans with their babies, but sometimes they come close to downtown and even attack, last year a polar bear entered the camp and was shot. So there are guns for sale in the stores here, and when we go on outdoor activities with the guides, they need to carry rifles at all times. After the spring equinox, the polar day begins, the long polar night ends, and the long hours of sunlight are so comfortable! I heard that Tom Cruise has been filming in Longyearbyen for the last half month, and you can see his helicopter taking off and landing on the snowy mountains 🏔️, a magical time and space hahaha.
