After the island tour, we also recommend visiting Godaido, the symbol of Matsushima. Godaido was originally called Bishamondo, built by Sakanoue no Tamuramaro during his eastern expedition in the Daido era (807-809). Later, it was renamed Godaido when the Great Master Jikaku Ennin enshrined the statues of the Five Great Wisdom Kings. The current building was rebuilt by Date Masamune in Keicho 9 (1604) and is the oldest existing Momoyama architecture in the Tohoku region. The frog-leg struts on all four sides of the hall are decorated with carvings of the twelve zodiac signs according to their directions.
