A Paradise for Cat Lovers

#myhiddengems Houtong Cat Village, located in New Taipei City, is a hidden gem that has gained fame for its feline residents. Originally a bustling coal mining town, Houtong has been transformed into a haven for cat lovers after local volunteers started caring for the stray cats left behind when the mines closed. Today, the village is home to hundreds of friendly cats that roam freely around the town, lounging on shop windowsills, wandering through the streets, and playing with visitors. Aside from the cats, Houtong offers a glimpse into Taiwan’s industrial past with its well-preserved mining structures, tunnels, and a small museum dedicated to the history of coal mining in the area. Visitors can also enjoy scenic views of the Keelung River and surrounding mountains from the village’s many walking paths. Houtong Cat Village is a unique destination that combines adorable animals, history, and beautiful scenery, making it a delightful spot for a day trip from Taipei.

Houtong Cat Village

In little more than two years, Houtong, which is located 35km east of Taipei in Ruifang district, managed to reinvent itself as a complete cat village. Today, more than 200 cats live in Houtong and a tourist industry has emerged with shops, cafes and restaurants catering to the many visitors who descend on this feline frontier every weekend. How to get there : The easiest way to get here is by train from Taipei Station. Take the Yilan line (most often the terminus will be Su’ao) and simply get off in Houtong about an hour later. #unforgettableexperiences #local #cat #taiwan #travelinspiration
