Jordan Dana to Petra: Dana Village to Petra Treasury via Nabataean Sandstone Cliffs

#arrivalguide This is the headline 4–5 day section of the Jordan Trail, 75 km point-to-point, and I did it guided in March. Day 1 Dana Village (1,200 m) descends Wadi Dana to Feynan Ecolodge—20 km, mostly downhill, 5–6 hours; lodge is 120–160 JOD full board, candlelit, no mains power.Day 2 crosses Wadi Araba’s western edge to a Bedouin camp near Wadi Abu Sakakin (guide cost 40–60 JOD/day, water drops handled by him).Day 3 climbs Naqb Shdeid (“the hard way”) to Ras el Feid cols (630 m then 895 m), 16 km. Day 4–5 run via Little Petra (Siq al-Barid, free if you enter from the back lane) and descend the Nabataean stairways to the Monastery, then the Royal Tombs, reaching Al-Khazneh (the Treasury) around 11 am on day 5. Dana Biosphere entry is 7–15 JOD, separate from Petra’s 50 JOD ticket (Jordan Pass covers Petra + visa but not Dana).Navigation without a guide is genuinely dangerous—no marks on the Araba crossing, GPS drift near the Israeli border, zero water. I carried 3 L/day and still ran low once; the guide’s donkey carried the rest. Mistake: I underestimated the Wadi Araba heat in March (34°C) and sunburned my neck. Nights at Rajef homestay (15–25 JOD with meals) were cold at 900 m—pack a fleece. Nubian ibex on Day 1 at dawn, griffon vultures daily. Question: is the guided version (≈$1,000 for 5 days) worth it versus self-supported with a GPS and pre-cache water? I say yes for first-timers; the Nabataean inscription translations alone justify it.
