Thrilling Hiking Journey in the Rila Mountains of Bulgaria

Years ago, as a young traveler exploring Eastern Europe, my first stop was Bulgaria. One of the itineraries I planned was a solo hike from the Rila Monastery, passing through the 2500-meter-high Rila Mountains, staying overnight at a mountain lodge, and ending the journey at the Seven Rila Lakes. I initially thought the 5-hour journey would allow me to reach the lodge before the 8 PM sunset. However, I got lost in the forest midway, and the steep ascent took a toll on my stamina. By 4 PM, I hadn't even completed half of the planned route. Despite occasional misdirections and some ankle pain, and with parts of the trail becoming muddy after the rain, I was fortunate to meet a few Israeli hikers along the way. We traveled together and reached the popular tourist spot, the Seven Lakes, around noon. Seeing the tourist-friendly paths and facilities, this journey through the Rila Mountains came to an end.

The Monastery of Saint Ivan of Rila

The Monastery of Saint Ivan of Rila, better known as the Rila Monastery (Bulgarian: Рилски манастир, Rilski manastir) is the largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria. It is situated in the southwestern Rila Mountains, 117 km (73 mi) south of the capital Sofia in the deep valley of the Rilska River ("Rila River") at an elevation of 1,147 m (3,763 ft) above sea level, inside of Rila Monastery Nature Park. The monastery is named after its founder, the hermit Ivan of Rila (876 - 946 AD), and houses around 60 monks. It is traditionally thought that the monastery was founded by the hermit St. Ivan of Rila, whose name it bears, during the rule of Tsar Peter I (927-968). The hermit actually lived in a cave without any material possessions not far from the monastery's location, while the complex was built by his students, who came to the mountains to receive their education.

In the national park of Rila, #bulgaria are located the 7 Rila lakes and the highest peak of the peninsula and the country also - Musala #peak - 2925m. Everything here is in very high altitude but there are many villas where you can sleep on your way up to the peak. During the summer there are plenty of tourist here. Another suggestion would be to book a day trip for private pick up and drop off options. Attraction: It’s more than just a building, this monastery was founded in 10th century by St. John of Rila, regarded it as one of Bulgaria’s most cultural, historical and architectural monuments and key attraction for Bulgaria and Southern Europe. Accommodations: For pilgrims and tourists, accommodations can be booked via website, though a day trip from Sofia might be enough. Best Time to Travel: I would say between autumn period where you can also appreciate stunning foliage all around Rila mountains. Quick escape from Sofia - Rila Monastery

Getting there by car - Drive for 2 hours from Sofia but best is to join guided tour because there’s lot of things you can learn about the monastery and history of Bulgaria. The monastery is named after its founder, Saint John of Rila who live in a cave nearby the monastery. The monastery was build by one of his students and its used as an education complex. There is also paid museum that help you to learn more history of Bulgaria The view and surrounding around the monastery is amazing. If you feel hungry there is a bakery that sell traditional Bulgarian bread and also few restaurants. There’s also souvenirs shop that sell rose soap and miniature rose perfume. Tips: Avoid visiting on Christmas or New Year eve as some place will close early or totally close.

✨The perfect day trip from Sofia✨ About 1.5 hours outside of Sofia, the Rila Monastery is a great day-trip destination. Located inside the grounds is a beautiful church covered in vivid patterns and colorful paintings. The exterior of the church is covered in cautionary tales from the Bible and with very distinct angel and demon portrails. They can be seen guiding humans towards good and evil things; people are faced with the choice of being good or bad in life and this later determine if they will go to hell or heaven in the afterlife. We decided to get a tour guide to learn more about the monastery’s history.We paid for a 30-minute guided tour in English. We learned that the stories painted on the walls of the church has not been restored since it was painted on in 1846. It was very hard to believe as the colors were so vivid! The guide told us that because they actually are unsure what ingredients were used to make the original paint, they were afraid any restoration will only damage the paintings further. The most interesting part of the tour was that we got to see a typical room that a monk would stay in during their time at the monastery. These rooms feature a kitchen area and a living area with a bed. Sometimes these rooms would be occupied by 2 monks if one is studying under the other. #culturalattraction
