St. John Lateran (Italian: San Giovanni in Laterano) is as famous as St. Peter's Basilica. It is located in Laterano, outside the ancient city of Rome, so it is also known as St. John Lateran (English: St. John Lateran, Chinese translation: Lateran St. John's Cathedral), and Catholics call it Lateran St. John's Cathedral. St. John Lateran is the oldest church in Rome - several years earlier than St. Peter's Basilica - it was built in 313 AD and was donated to the Pope by Emperor Constantine, so there is a statue of Constantine at the left end of the porch. Before 1309, it was the main residence of the Pope. Before the 19th century, the Pope was also crowned here. There is also the throne of the Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rome (served by the Pope), and the status of the church is prominent. But by the 17th century, it had been in disrepair for a long time. Therefore, Pope Innocent X ordered the architectural giant Borromini to be responsible for the complete renovation of St. John Lateran. The triumphal arch-style facade and gate tower were designed by Alessandro Galilei, and the gate tower eaves are 6 meters high with statues of Christ and saints. When Borromini renovated St. John Lateran, he was required to keep the original internal structure and the wooden ceiling that has been used since the 16th century. After his very flexible design treatment, these original structures and the exquisitely carved wooden ceilings are quite coordinated with the new parts. The interior decoration of the cathedral is a collection of various arts, and its magnificence is breathtaking.
