Sunny weather at Sevanavank Monastery

Formerly an island, it was transformed into a peninsula during the Soviet era due to water level adjustments. It is the world's largest freshwater lake in a mountainous region. Located at approximately 1,900m above sea level, the monastery offers panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains, making it an ideal location for photography and landscape viewing. It is said to have been founded in 874 by Princess Mariam, a member of the Armenian royal family, following the death of her husband, the king. At the time, the monastery primarily served as a training center for monks, where commoners, not just children of nobles, gathered to train as monks. The monastery was closed due to religious persecution, but has now been restored and is used for tourism and some religious ceremonies. The monastery consists of the Church of the Holy Apostles and the Church of the Virgin Mary. The building, built in traditional Armenian architecture using black basalt, has a relatively modest interior. Although simple, the exterior scenery and serene atmosphere leave a profound impression. The weather is crucial for visiting Sevan Monastery. When I visited, the weather seemed to be a gift. (May 19, 2025)
