Sevanavank Monastery is located on the Sevan Peninsula, on the northwestern side of Lake Sevan, approximately 60 km from Yerevan. Originally an island, it became a peninsula during the Soviet era due to water level adjustments. Lake Sevan is one of the largest high-altitude freshwater lakes in the world. Situated at an altitude of about 1900 meters, the monastery offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the lake and surrounding mountains, making it an ideal spot for photography and enjoying the scenery. It is said that the monastery was built in 874 by Princess Mariam, a member of the Armenian royal family, after the death of her husband, the king. In the past, the monastery was primarily used as a training center for monks, especially for those who were not from noble families but commoners seeking monastic training. Although the monastery was closed due to religious oppression, it has since been restored and is now used for tourism and some religious ceremonies. The monastery consists of two buildings: the Church of the Holy Apostles and the Church of the Holy Mother of God. Built with black basalt in the traditional Armenian architectural style, the interior of the buildings is relatively modest, but the external scenery and tranquil atmosphere leave a profound impression. The weather plays a crucial role in visiting Sevanavank Monastery. When I visited, the weather felt like a wonderful gift to me. (May 19, 2025)
