North Khleang

North Khleang, also known as "Kleang Mebon," is an ancient temple located in the Angkor Archaeological Park in Siem Reap, Cambodia. It is one of the significant historical sites dating back to the Khmer Empire, specifically built during the reign of King Jayavarman V in the late 10th century to early 11th century. The temple is part of the larger Angkor Thom complex, situated to the northeast of the Royal Palace area and near the Victory Gate (Gate of the Dead). It stands close to the Northern Khleang reservoir, which served as a significant water source for the city during that time. North Khleang, like its southern counterpart, South Khleang, was originally constructed as a "Kleang," which refers to a type of building that served as a storage space or possibly a resting place for the king and the royal family during their visits to Angkor Thom. The architectural style of North Khleang is distinctive, featuring a rectangular plan with five tower-like structures on the corners. The central structure, adorned with beautiful carvings and decorative elements, is the most prominent. The sandstone walls of the temple display intricate bas-reliefs depicting various mythological and religious scenes, showcasing the artistic prowess of the Khmer craftsmen of that era. Over the centuries, North Khleang has undergone periods of decline and restoration efforts. Its state of preservation today allows visitors to appreciate the grandeur and ingenuity of Khmer architecture from the late 10th to early 11th centuries. As part of the Angkor Archaeological Park, North Khleang, along with other temples in the area, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992.
