Located near the village of Patsos, about 30 km from Rethymno, this gorge is free to enter and offers a refreshing escape into nature. The hike through Patsos Gorge is moderately challenging, with rugged paths that wind through a lush, green canyon. The highlight for me was the tiny, ancient Agios Antonios chapel built into the rock, where locals still leave offerings. The gorge also has small waterfalls and natural pools, perfect for cooling off after a warm hike. After my hike, I stopped at a nearby taverna in Patsos village for a delicious, traditional Cretan meal. If you’re in the area, combine this with a visit to the nearby Potami Dam or the Arkadi Monastery for a full day of exploring.
