Sheep have become an important force in protecting the ancient ruins of Pompeii.

The ancient city of Pompeii in Italy covers an area of 66 hectares and was built in the 4th century BC. In 49 AD, it was buried by volcanic ash due to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, and about 2/3 of the site has been excavated so far. To prevent the unexcavated areas of the ancient city from being damaged by weeds and other plants, a large amount of maintenance costs are required. Therefore, the Italian government has deployed about 150 sheep in the ancient city, using the "sheep lawn mower" method to let the sheep eat the grass on the ancient city walls and houses. This method does not use chemical herbicides or lawn mowers, which not only protects the original ecology of the ancient city site, but also saves a considerable amount of expenses. The sheep live in Pompeii and create a unique scenery line in the ancient city.
