Taipei 101 was designed by C.Y. Lee. From a high vantage point, its bucket-like design facilitates indoor viewing of the outside world. Every eight floors form a bucket, each bucket forms a section, and each section serves as a structural unit. Taipei 101 connects bucket by bucket, reaching towards the sky. Like bamboo growing segment by segment, it symbolizes continuous progress and business prosperity. In the East, the display of height and width emphasizes the extension of unit numbers rather than the volume expansion commonly used in the West. Its vertical layout stacks layer upon layer like a pagoda, extending upwards; the horizontal spread is akin to the interconnected courtyards of the Forbidden City in Beijing, advancing layer by layer, all reflecting the building's size through the increase or decrease of unit numbers. The use of symbols and totems aims to convey complete information. Therefore, symbols like the Ruyi and dragon-phoenix totems are cleverly integrated into the architecture. For example, the roofs of the shopping malls are designed with Ruyi phoenix tails, symbolizing good fortune; auspicious dragons are placed at the sharp corners of buildings to ward off bad energy. On the 24th and 27th floors, circular and square patterns are used as mortise and tenon joints, symbolizing the operation of the universe - 'the circle represents the sky, as the body; the square represents the earth, as the function.' This design uses traditional wooden structure mortise and tenon methods to connect the upper eight buckets and the lower three buckets, highlighting the building's stability. All these are clever uses of information, aiming to convey a sense of completeness.
