Kunimigaoka: Sea of Clouds, Mythology, and Folklore - A Perfect Viewing Platform

Kunimigaoka is a famous tourist spot in Miyazaki Prefecture, known for its rich history and mythological tales. This hill, standing at an elevation of 513 meters, is located in the Takachiho Basin and is an excellent place to view the sea of clouds. According to Japanese mythology, Kunimigaoka is closely associated with Takeiwatatsu-no-Mikoto, the grandson of Japan's first emperor. It is said that Takeiwatatsu-no-Mikoto once stood on this hill to survey the land he ruled over while on his way to govern the Kyushu region, hence the name 'Kunimigaoka,' which means 'Hill of National View.' From the viewing platform on Kunimigaoka, visitors can take in the magnificent scenery of the Takachiho Basin. To the east lies the myth-filled town of Komachi, to the west is Mount Aso, Japan's largest active volcano, and to the north is Mount Sobo, the main peak of the Kyushu Mountains. Under the right weather conditions, especially from mid-September to late November, Kunimigaoka offers breathtaking views of the sea of clouds, making visitors feel as if they are floating in the sky. During the autumn foliage season, people often sing the labor folk song 'Kari-kari-kiri,' which originated in the Takachiho area and reflects the hardships of rural life. Another significant element of Kunimigaoka is the statue of Ninigi-no-Mikoto located in the center of the hill. According to local legends, Ninigi-no-Mikoto was the first deity to rule this world and once lost his way here. With the help of local residents, he finally reached his destination.
