Asilah, A piece of Art

Throughout history, the small coastal city of Azilah has been coveted by both Portugal & Spain, and thus has been a longstanding scene of great bloodshed. Fortunately, on our visit today we will discover that Azilah’s history has a kinder side as well-the city is well known for its enormous cultural and artistic contribution to Morocco’s history. Every summer, the international festival of Azilah attracts thousands of people from all over the world. Take a walk through the old town with its narrow streets to learn about Azilah’s fascinating history. This beautiful city was populated first by the Phoenicians (1500 B.C) who used it as trading port, with the Portuguese era beginning in the 15th century and finishing in 1692 when the city was liberated and returned to Morocco. Today, it is one of the most beautiful seaside resorts on Morocco’s Atlantic coast, especially during the summer, with so many desert and quiet plagues, Mediterranean architecture of the houses (painted in white and blue), the gentleness of its people, museums and street-artists from around the world.
